Good Companies in Calgary to Work for?
Hello.
I arrived in Calgary 9 days ago. I have been working at temp agencies since I moved, and staying at the Drop-In Centre, until I find my own place. My question is where is a great place to work, in regards to construction/manufacturing/etc. I am mainly a blue-collar worker, and came here to celebrate the Flames. I believe they will make it far. Your input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!!

Go anywhere downtown where there is a crane. Where there is a crane, there is a job.

Or if you have wheels check out where they are building multi family units in the suburbs. There's always signs looking for workers.
If not let us know and I can try and grab some phone numbers to PM you.
Where abouts in Manitoba are you from? I moved here from Winnipeg in 1992.

Just put a sign on top of your head with the words "Am able to work". Someone should come up to you and offer you a job in about 10 seconds.

It's been a while, but don't some guys hang out at 12 ave and centre street in the parking lot, and then companies that need workers just come by and offer up work?

Stay away from cash corner. You can do much better if you have some ambition.

It should be pretty easy.
Step 1) Aquire brick
Step 2) Throw brick (any direction will do)
Step 3) Locate thrown brick
Step 4) Apply for job advertised on "Help Wanted" sign that was struck by brick
Seriously though.
Perhaps try the home builders in town.
With summer approaching there will once again be a crunch for framers, cribbers, or any other type of labour position.
In Calgary, if you have a genuine desire to work I can guarantee you will find a job. The only people in Calgary who don't have jobs right now, are the ones who don't want to work.
Good luck.

Down in my neighborhood there has been a sign offering jobs for house framers since January. Check some of the new suburbs!

I'm not 100% sure about the blue collar stuff, but in the white collar world the work day begins for many people around 7:00 in Calgary. I think I saw something about how we are one of the earliest to work cities in the country.
I know the guys on my street who drive work trucks are leaving home around the same time as me; around 6:20 am.

I leave at 6:30 myself ... to arrive at work at 7. Then again, I don't have much of a choice.

The country? How about the world? Most people everywhere else start work @9am, not 7 or 8am!

I'm an electrician myself and I've always started work at 7am, it's standard for construction in the city. If you are looking for work as a general labourer, go to the Manpower office and fill out the forms, they'll put you to work the next day guaranteed.

I agree; I've worked in many places and Calgary has by far the earliest start times. Here in Montreal I don't start until 9:30 or 10:00.

Slight O/T but related to the work hours thing. I read a study a couple years back where it outlined how Calgarians start earlier, work longer days, more hours in a week and more days in a year than any other city in Canada.
Bottom line - we work too damn much!

When I moved to Calgary it became apparent pretty quickly that Calgarians work damn hard, harder than anywhere else I'd been.
And then I saw the city just shut down for Stampede. This city knows when it's time to work, but when it's time to party nobody does it better.

Stuart Olsen has a big sign up at the Peter Lougheed hospital saying that they are hiring. Like any trade right now, they are all hurting for people.

Not sure about other office jobs but i know for sure if you have anything to do with Finance it's because the markets open at 730am Calgary time. So the reason why we worked early was because of the Eastern Time Zone.
It kinda blew back then. I had to be at work by 6am! Thats the time i goto bed now. hehe. I like SAIT. I don't have to be here until 11am.
