Default NE Calgary Help

Hi all,

Sorry to use a hockey forum as an information gathering spot but it seems like I have no other choice. I'm doing a field placement in Calgary in the next coming weeks and am living out of a suitcase in NE Calgary. I believe I'll be in the Whitehorn area of town (near 36th Street NE and 32nd Ave NE). Just a few questions so I can try to become familiar with the area...

Safe place to walk in the morning/evening? My shifts are 12 hours long and hinge on the 7 am / 7 pm shifts. I hope it isn't too rough, I currently walk downtown Edmonton to school everyday and experience no problems, so hopefully it's somewhat safe.

Secondly, is there any sort of mall or grocery store in the area of 36th St and 32nd Ave? Anything in the Sunridge mall?

Thanks again for all the help ahead of time and hopefully you don't find this too rude to be asked on the forum.

Thanks again, and can't wait to experience Calgary (and hopefully get a job there),

Jared

You will be in an area I like to call the "upper hood". It isnt exactly the best part of town, but it isnt terrible either.

There is a Safeway right on the NW corner of 32nd and 36th and you are right on top of Sunridge mall, so shopping is very convienent. There is also a strip mall anchored by London Drugs (name escapes me) on the SW corner of 32nd and 36th, Marlborough Mall is straight south on 36th, and really, both 32nd Ave and 36th Street are resteraunts, pubs and stores for their entire length south and west.

You'll be right on top of the LRT line as well, so easy access to anywhere else in Calgary if you wish.

I believe its called London Towne Square.. but it has been a long time since I lived around there.

As for walking around in that area, it shouldn't really be a problem. Especially at 7am or 7pm. Its not the greatest area in the city but it is pretty busy around there so there at always lots of people around, especially at the hours you mentioned.

No a lot of pedestrian traffic in that area. East of 36th it is residential, west of it is commercial/retail. There are a number of grocery stores in the area - Safeway (as mentioned), Sobeys (where the theatres used to be), London Drugs has a small selection of groceries too. Beside Sunridge is Superstore.

When you are saying you are walking, from where to where? The hotels are over by Barlow, nothing on 36th per se (unless you get down to the Coast Plaza),

Thanks everybody for the responses...knowing that there's a safeway and some other stores there is a great asset.

Bobblehead, I'm staying at the Super 8 Airport on Barlow trail and approx. 36th. I have to end up at 37th Avenue and 35th Street (approx.).

It's about a 2.2 km walk according to Google Maps.

Lets hope the weather is nice.

You are forgetting that there is a hospital there too. Lots of ambulance traffic... Also, all the idiots/drunks from the hospital and crazy people like to wonder around..

Its a bit of a hike. You'll walk by a bunch of restaurants, Sobeys, near a Safeway (but they are all new where your work is, long walk with a bag of groceries). Sounds like you are just up from the Safeway; 37th ave stops at 32nd St, but you are probably on the street that goes from 32nd (by the Blockbuster/Safeway) up to 39th (by the Whitehorn C-Train Stop)
Completely residential/commercial area, so very few pedestrians. Most of your walk you can go along 32nd, and there will always be quite a bit of traffic around.

If memory serves me right your hotel is near a McDonalds and Tim Horton's as well. Also near Hooters, Toad and Turtle Pub and a Vietnamese place.

I grew up in Whitehorn up untill 1991. I drive by every once and a while to check out the 4 different houses we had in the area and it went down hill for a while but now it is pretty nice shape. Safer than down town and better then many in that part of town. Last time I drove by they built a real nice retirement community in the that used to have a radio booster in it where we snuck into to pretend hunt rabbits and gophers.

Well,

I'm a little slow on the update but I just wanted to thank everybody for helping out with the info. Things went great; the walk was a little longer than I expected (25-35 minutes) but the information you guys gave me was great.

And talking about great, the place I did my field placement looks like they'll be hiring me too so I'll be a brand new resident of Calgary...now just to find a place to live

Thanks again guys, I hate to use a hockey forum for something as trivial as this but I appreciate the hell out of it!

Congrats! Have fun moving to Calgary from Edmonton! You'll never go back. Hope you don't want to buy a house though

I must say, the six days I had in Calgary were quite fun. I love being so close to the mountains (I grew up in BC, so I took them for granted when I moved to Edmonton). Yeah, I saw the house prices bounce up something like 75 grand on globalTV...I'll be renting an apartment possibly or trying to crash with friends/family for a few weeks/months until I figure out what I want to do in regards to a place to live and see how my finicial state is.

Thanks though Black Archer, hopefully I'll be moving in the beginning of May just when those flames make that final push for Lord Stanley. Now I just have to buy a flames jersey

Hmmm, I didn't see this thread when it first showed up, but I'd almost be scared living in an area like that the way some people were talking in the thread.

I've been living in Whitehorn for a little over 2 years now, and the worst thing that I've had is some drunk dude walking around on my roof last week. This area is so sleepy and quiet, at least in the cul-de-sac I'm living in. The guy on one side of me has lived there for 15 years and says he'll never leave, the guy on the other side has been here for 25 years and doesn't ever want to leave. The guy across the road has been there since the house was built (1975) and hasn't had any really bad experiences in his time here.

The NE gets such a bad rap, but I really think the southern half of Whitehorn and northern half of Rundle are fantastic places to live, as well as significant portions of Temple and Pineridge. Very quiet, I never hear sirens like someone mentioned, and the house prices are extremely affordable, compared to the rest of the city. I live in a fairly updated 1200 sq. ft. bungalow in a cozy cul-de-sac, with 8 full grown trees on my lot and a double detached garage, and the place is only worth a maximum of 275K right now. I don't think I can find another area in the city with value like that.
