Default Anybody been to the Outer Banks in North Carolina?

I just proposed to my gf a couple weeks back and I'm trying to figure out where to go for our honeymoon. At first, we wanted to go to some place exotic - Cook Islands, Fiji, etc.

But we also want to go to a place where it'd be easy to get to later on in our marriage without spending over $5000(?) to get there...

My fiance loves lighthouses and I looked at a map of places where some nice lighthouses are. Well, I've heard the Outer Banks (OBX) is quite nice and has some great beaches and scenary too.

Has anybody been there, know any places to stay for reasonable $$?

Any help would be great! Thanks.

Sounds like a great place.

But if I were you, I'd stay away from Asheville. There's a crazy Hillbilly Testicle-stealing cult that hangs out there. Bet that would put a real damper on folks' honeymoons.

Never been myself but from what I heard, great scenery and lots of seafood. Almost sounds like home for me.

Ya? Where are you from? Is it a good place for honeymooning(?) I'm still open to suggestions on places to go...

I hear Cuba is a really nice place to vacation/honeymoon. I hear it is pretty cheap too.

When's the wedding/when will the honeymoon be? I'm from Nova Scotia myself. I'd highly recommend it if you were doing it in the fall of the year.

Leaves all changing different colors on the trees, cool breeze blowing in off the water, watching the sun set over the ocean, everything happens in slow motion down there. If you're doing the honeymoon in September or October, it's a place to think about and would probably be a lot cheaper than going somewhere really exotic. Also, if you do go down there, check out the Cape Breton highlands.

Get Jon in this thread, he'll let you know what it's like down there, too.

I live somewhat nearby, but have never been. My brother and his wife went when they came up to visit, and really enjoyed themselves. It is pretty relaxed and secluded from what I hear. Rent a house if you can afford it. We've rented houses in similar beach areas in VA/NC, and that is a great way to spend a week or two.

I'd be a little apprehensive about hurricanes in late summer/early fall. It seems like every year now, there is at least one that at least looks like it is heading to the outer banks. It kind of ruins your vacation once you have to start thinking about evacuating or actually evacuating.

wouldn't the sun rise over the ocean in NS?

Thanks for the insight... I have a couple questions, if you don't mind:

1. We're planning to have the wedding the weekend of August 12th. Is that the beginnning of hurricane season?

2. From your travels in VA/NC, can you recommend places to stay? If you could list the prices that'd be great too! We'd love to be as close to the beach as possible....

Thanks again!

Sandbridge is the area I am most familiar with. We try to rent a house there every summer for a week. We've stayed at friend's houses in a couple of North Carolina beaches. And stayed at some big chain hotels in VA beach and Myrtle beach (I wouldn't recommend either of those places for a honeymoon, too commercial).

We only choose Sandbridge over the outer banks because it is closer. It is a little more expensive (mostly due to proximity to higher populations), and probably not quite as nice as the outer banks.

We are actually looking right now at booking a place in the outer banks for a week in August as well when my parents come down. We just use a website like this: http://www.villagerealtyobx.com/. Houses generally are $3000/week. It is hard to find anything nice that is smaller than 4 or 5 bedrooms, so it makes it pretty pricey for a couple. I think there are lots of Condos and such available for a little less. These places are usually well equipped with full kitchens/big screen TVs/private pools/BBQs/etc.

That is getting into the heart of hurricane season. The likelihood of one coming at you the week you are there is small, just something to consider is all.

My wife grew up going to Emerald Isle and Atlantic beach. She really likes Emerald Isle.

NS is the phallic looking peninsula that has Ocean pretty much surrounding the whole province, so it can be and is, both.
