Thumbs up The Rebel League -- book

Not so long ago someone mentioned this book about the WHA. Who was it? Whoever you are, thanks for bringing it up because I picked it up on your recommendation and it really is a good book.

Like all good hockey books it's full of a lot of wild tales, corruption, dirty play, some foul language, funny pictures from the 70's, that kind of thing. It also goes into pretty good detail about the team and events that inspired Slapshot. If you like that movie you should probably read this book. If you don't like that movie you should probably see a psychiatrist.

There are some great pictures. One of them is Harry Neale sitting in his office wearing a plaid suit that Herb Tarleck would be ashamed to wear. It is hilarious.

And who knew Rich Preston was such a star? I knew he played but I pegged him for a grinder just because, I don't know, he seems like he'd be a grinder. But nope, he won the WHA's version of the Conn Smythe trophy the last time the Avco Cup was awarded. Throughout his NHL and WHL career he played with Gordie Howe and Stan Mikita, which I think is pretty cool.

Oh and in case you didn't know it, the old-time NHL owners were the biggest bunch of crooks going.

Bla bla bla it's a good book. Anyone else read it? I know someone did.

I wrote a review here some months ago, its a great book, and its a good look at a league that was founded on fluff and prayer.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I know for a fact that Calgary Public Library has this particular book. I borrowed it last fall. Great book with a ton of colorful anecdotes. There is an awesome story about Eric Bishop, the Cowboys' radio play-by-play man.

After reading the book, I always wonder why someone hasn't made a videogame based on the WHA.

I think I also put up a recommendation for this book awhile back. A terrific read for sure.
