Wild Drop Game 2

The Wild knew they’d be in for a much tougher Game 2, and indeed they were.

The Wild played two solid periods before being dominated in the third, ultimately dropping a 3-2 decision to the Flames. After the game GM Farhall commented:

”Tough to be too upset with a game like that. We had the game tied late in the third, either team could’ve won it and they got the big goal. The being said, we were badly outplayed in the third and that’s a bit of a concern.”

With the series now tied at 2, the two teams head to Minny where Farhall hopes home ice can play a factor.

“We are comfortable playing at home and it allows us to get a bit more practice in. I have a feeling though that this is another series that could go 6 or 7, so we have to be ready for that”.

Flames 3 Wild 2

Flames finally woke up in the second game of the second round of the playoffs. A spirited affair resulting in a win for the good guys.

"Panic" Yannick Tremblay opened the scoring with his first of the playoffs. Tremblay picked up the pass as he was pinching in from the point and roofed a shot passed the screened Curtis Joseph.

Teemu Selanne also found the net for the first time in the playoffs taking a feed from Murray and sliding it between Cujo's legs.

The PP was working at a good clip this game, going 2 for 5 and it eventually also tallied the game winning goal as Richard Zednick took a one timer and beat the sprawled out Wild goaltender.

This evens the series at 1 game a piece heading back to the Excel Energy Centre in Minnesota.

Goalie Statistics

Curtis Joseph (WIL), 29 saves out of 32 shots, L, 4-3-0
Miikka Kiprusoff (FLA), 26 saves out of 28 shots, W, 5-1-0

Power Play Conversions
WILD 1 for 3
FLAMES 2 for 5

Game Stars
1 - Miikka Kiprusoff (FLA)
2 - Yannick Tremblay (FLA)
3 - Bryan McCabe (WIL)

Oil break through in the third to score four unanswered goals to take a 2 – 0 series lead over the Wings. It was what you may expect from a play-off game. Tight checking, close game. Kapenen scored his second of the campaign at 4:51 of the third lifting the Wings to a tie at 3 – 3. Feeling the momentum changing the oil went to work, Doan scores 14 seconds later to give the oil the lead back. Then Iggy, Carter, and Hamrlik finished it off by added goals of their own. Final score was 7 – 3.

The Oil now board a flight headed for the U.S. for the first time in the play-offs as the series shifts to Detroit for games 3 and 4.

Game notes:

Samsanov 5 point night

Oil chase Dunham from the net (4th goalie in 6 games to be chased from the net)

Goalie Statistics
Mike Dunham (WIN), 16 saves out of 21 shots, L, 3-3-0
Johan Hedberg (WIN), 5 saves out of 7 shots
Martin Brodeur (OIL), 25 saves out of 28 shots, W, 6-0-0

Power Play Conversions
WINGS 0 for 4
OILERS 2 for 4

Game Stars
1 - Sergei Samsonov (OIL)
2 - Susie Bertuzzi (WIN)
3 - Karel Rachunek (OIL)

Oil GM Rink Rat addressed the media prior to exiting the Rexall Place.

Rink: Well that’s two!

Q: What are your thoughts as the series shifts back to Detroit for games 3 and 4?

Rink: This series is far from over, the Wings are a good team, they’re not hosting the tournament, they have earned a right to be here. They were around .500 at home this year ….. I think, they were down twice to the Preds in the first round, and they are still here. So we expect the crowd and the Wings will be ready for game 3.

Q: What do the Oil need to do to be successful in Detroit?

Rink: Win a hockey game or two. We are not going to do anything different at this point; Martin is the key, as he knows how to win hockey games.

Q: Any updates on Zherdev or Weiss, absent from both games in Edmonton?

Rink: Ya, the kid (Zherdev) seems to be a quick healer, he skated with the team yesterday. We expect Nik to be in the line up Tuesday night. Weiss has been skating but may not be ready for any of the Detroit series.

Q: What player has surprised you the most so far in the post season?

Rink: Its not really a surprise, but we have been very impressed with Jeff (Carter). The kid popped in 22 goals and 22 assists this year playing on the third line in about 60 games. Come play-off time we elected to go with experience trading for Ricci at the deadline, that left Jeff with out a regular shift. With the loss of Zherdev for the first two games we moved Jeff in to the second line RW spot. And he produced with a goal and an assist with a plus 3 today!.

Q: I did not see Jeff’s name on therookie of the year ballots this year, any comment?

Rink: No, no comment

Q: What remaining team do you fear the most?

Rink: That’s an easy one! The Wings, we just kicked their ars two games in Edmonton. They will not be a happy bunch come Tuesday.

Tuesady night …… Oil and Wings ……… Buy a ticket!!
