PARTY IN MOTOWN
Red Wings' fans hit streets to celebrate
DETROIT (AP) The
Detroit Red Wings could hear the ear-splitting roars from the capacity crowd at Joe Louis Arena on Sunday night as they advanced to the second round.
"We Want The Oilers," chanted fans decked out in red jerseys and sporting makeshift Styrofoam and foil cups as they watched the Wings' 5-4 overtime victory in game 6 against a dejected Nashville Predator team. Last year, the Red Wings missed the post season but on a Sunday night the previous season was erased as fans flocked to the streets to celebrate.
Highway exits leading to downtown were shut down just before midnight as the city became gridlocked with revelers, Detroit police public information officer and
head of the Red Wing fan club Kevin Guy said he knew of no arrests late Tuesday night.
"There's nothing destructive or anything of that nature going on. The celebration is just what we expected" KG said. Even before the game ended, city officials announced the victory parade will be held at 11:30 a.m Monday, starting at know your Roll Avenue, ending at Candy ass way.
Red Wings' team work and masterful play have helped them in knocking off the division leaders. Shawn Bates fresh off being named the CPHL player of the week continued his hot hand in game 6 as he led all Detroit players in scoring and with his strong defensive play. Mike Dunham silenced several of his critics by out performing Rick Dipietro and Martin Gerber. It was a good hard series and
lots of credit goes to Nashville on a strong season. Every game was decided by one goal and it lived up to its billing.
"Its a real sweet victory. After all the trash that has been going back and forth between the two coaches it makes this just that much more enjoyable."
We now look forward to hearing the Preds post series remarks as the coach and GM from Nashville has been hiding from the media ever since his teams heartbreaking overtime loss in game 4.
