Default Cheapest place to live

Im thinking about moving to Cochrane or Airdrie in a few years when I move out. Calgary is getting way too expensive, busy, too big in general.
Does anyone know what town is cheaper to live in but still close to calgary? and how much the homes/condos are or if you have any websites for that..thatd be great.

Not sure about Cochrane, but Chestermere isn't any cheaper, and Airdrie wasn't either when I last checked a few years ago.

You might check out Strathmore.

Are you looking at buying or renting? House or apartment? How much cheaper are you looking at? How far out of town are you willing to go?

The problem is all of the cities right around Calgary know what houses sell for here, and their prices reflect that. I found that some of the smaller towns like Black Diamond or Turner Valley were a little bit cheaper.

Also, if you are willing to go 100 km out of town you get into nice rural prices. I was almost tempted to move out there.

www.mls.ca

A little bit of research goes a long way...

The NE is always nice. My Whitehorn 1200 sqft bungalow in a nice quiet neighborhood would sell for around 250K or a little more. Tough to get that anywhere else in the city.

Or you can get a house built in Langdon. Only 15 minutes to the Glenmore/Deerfoot interchange.

Torinton... You don't mean Torrington, do you? Because that's a lot further than 45 minutes. About 150 km. Even if you go 120 all the way, it'll take you more than an hour. On the bright side, you can take all your guests to the gopher museum.

I'd look at that whole area south of there, though: Linden, Acme, Swallwell, Carbon, Bieseker. Once you get past Bieseker, I think properties start to drop in cost since it's no longer considered daily commute distance (though I've known some people who commute from there).

A friend bought a schoolhouse for 2 grand in 72 in Swallwell. Probably worth a half a million today.

In Sept I went down to Barons and looked at a 16,000 dollar house but when I seen the freezer floating around in the basement I asked a few questions.
The community hall had finally got there basement drained that day. One month after the first house had been flooded this year just five years after the last flood.

Torrington is more than 45 minutes.

Look east by 45 minutes. Try Rockyford. In ten years I have missed any house that ever went up for sale in that town. Maybe there never was a house that made it to the general public, lol. CULT ???

Edmonton.

Obviously you don't want to move that far.

I dont know if I would consider Langdon a "cheap" option now. A few years ago, yes. However lots are now in the $80,000 + range.

We built in Langdon in 1998 and our 1/4 acre lot was 29,000.

A home smaller than ours just sold for $332,000 a week ago.

There may be some non garage homes on smaller lots on the west side of town that may be a bit more affordable I am not sure.
