Default Help??? VCR recording from a HD Bell receiver

I asked this about a year ago ... but the kind answers at the time didn't seem to work.

Anyone ...

a) know if it's possible?
b) can give a simple step by step account on how to do it?

Toshiba HD TV
Toshiba DVD/VCR
Bell HD Receiver

Component cords for all but the TV/Bell where I have HGMI

Any help would be great. Thanks

Can you view the HD through the VCR?

I'm certainly no expert, but it seems to me that you would need to plug the main line to the digital reciever, the digital reciever to the VCR, the VCR to the TV. I don't have a fancy receiver though, so not sure if it has a couple outputs on the back?

Bingo, run your cables as you normally wold connecting any source to the VCR. Just make sure that when you "play" the feed from your dish receiver that you drop the feed from 1080i or 720i down to 480i. You should be able to record without any problem. I do this from my HD DVR all the time, and the problem has always been the source signal being "too rich" for the device to record. I hope this helps.

If you connect your VCR with AV or S-video you shouldn't have to change the settings from 1080i or 720i (p) down to 480i as the output for those cables should only be 480i

What I do with my shaw box and DVD recorder (should be the same).

Run coax into your reciever, then run AV or S-video from your reciever to your VCR, then connect your VCR which ever way you wish to your TV (coax or AV or S -video). To watch your Satellite on your TV continue to run your HDMI from the reciever to the TV.

You obviously wont be able to record true HD on your VCR nor will it be able to see a 1080i or 720i (p) signal.

This isn't quite the right model, but I think the back is similar

If memory serves, I currently run coax in ... HDMI out to TV. Nothing to the VCR

So component cables to the VCR? VCR to the TV as it already is wired, or an additional run?

I wouldn't run component from the box to the VCR (as you will have to change the settings on your reciever to 480 everytime you want to record).

Looks like it doesn't have an s-video output but it does look like it has Av output (red white yellow)

you don't need an additional run to the TV from the VCR

So ...

1. Coax in (in place)
2. HDMI to TV (in place)
3. AV from receiver to an input on the VCR/DVD (need to do)
4. VCR/DVD output to TV (in place)

and that does it?

yup

Then you will just have to set up your VCR to record input 1,2,3 or whatver it is called on your VCR and have your reciever set up to the correct channel

You must have the 6100 then; same model as me.

The standard yellow, white and red outputs from your receiver automatically downconvert for you, so it should just be a matter of running those respective colours into the matched inputs on your VCR. (Yellow to yellow, red to red, white to white.)

On your VCR you will need to select the input mode. Some models it's shown as a channel below 2, others there's a button labelled something like "input mode." Most VCR's have an input on the back called Input 1, and if there's also one on the front it will be called "input 2."

Hope that helps!

Edit: my page didn't open far enough to show me that you had already figured it out. (We need some sort of server fund raiser I think.)

I don't have a dish but this is what I think should happen:

1. Run Composite (Red-White-Yellow) from Bell Receiver "OUT" to VCR "IN"
2. Run another set of Composite from VCR "OUT" to TV "IN"
3. Turn on everything, set TV to VCR's input channel
4. Using the VCR's remote, select the channel you want to record
5. Use VCR's remote to program your Timed Recordings or just push record if you are recording now.

That should do it. Recorded program won't show up as HD obviously, but you'll at least see the show.

Funny that's something that Kevan Guy / Photon and I don't see eye to eye on.

I'm all for unique strings and not "need to put it here" strings that you can't find a damn thing on. I can see the avoid duplicate strings issue, but I can't stand long roping month to month strings that take a magnifying glass to find the response you're looking for.

But I have no pull around here!

Worked! Thanks guys.

Looks like I had it wired right from the start but didn't get the old VCR to Line Out 1 to make it work.

Thanks!
