Sunny travel advice requested...
My wife and I are looking to spend the first week of May someplace down south. We are thinking Mayan Riviera, but aren't averse to other recommendations.
What we hope for is something in the 4 star or better, and not too big. While we like a few drinks, we aren't looking to close the bar down. We are looking to relax, not party
Our last trip was our Honeymoon in Jibacoa, Cuba, which was excellent. We were scheduled to go to Dreams Tulum last fall, but hurrincane Wilma ended that.
Anyone have any places they would recommend, or places we should avoid? Good sites for prices or reviews?

I'm going to the Mayan the first week of May myself, and our resort sent us a post hurricane update. The only damage was 3 downed trees, the beaches are intact and everything.

We went to Huatulco (Mex) a couple of months ago.... Not a very big place, and definitely not a party hub. I found it pretty relaxing, and the hotel was nice (Barcelo)...went with Signature vacations and it was ok. There are other resorts around there as well, but here's some info from Sig vacations:

ok, I'll pop in here..since I own a travel agency.
I just got back from Cancun and stayed at the RIU Cancun.
Great resort, good food, beaches were spectacular. Some of the resorts in the area dont have their beaches up to snuff yet. But the RIU properties got on it right away and theirs are in wonderful shape.

I really enjoyed the Dominican Republic. It is a poorer country than Mexico and their number one industry is tourism. I was treated like gold where ever I went. It's also a good place to bring Western currancy (US, Canadian or Euro)
It also helped that I brought $50 in US dollar bills with me so I always had tipping money on hand.

After having spent 7 of the last 20 months lying around on the remotest beaches of Thailand it is SO hard to think of going on an all inclusive vacation to Mexico, etc.
Places like Koh Payam (Near Burma, not the one near Cambodia) or Had Yuan where it is like $3/night and you are on an empty and virtually private, perfect beach with great food and great people....
Man i miss it...
Claeren.

I'm biased towards Arizona.
Golf in the morning.
Quite a few beers by the pool in the afternoon.
I know it sounds boring.
But it's paradise to me!

Good ideas there.
The wife has always said she wants to "swim in a pool that has a swim up bar", so I think that is one of the criteria, as well as under 2K per person. Thailand sounds awesome, but I think it is a little far afield for one week away.

Grand Lido Braco in Jamica a couple of times Great food (the lambchops at the Grille are the best i have ever had), ok Beach, 9 hole executive golf on site included, Au Natural side that really adds to the flavour of the toga party, Miller Lite Beer.
Superclubs Breezes Varadero - Great Staff great beach, Food so so but all the food in cuba is pretty much crap. 3 round of golf generally included although we have played every day when we have gone at no charge. Great course to boot. Safe to leave the resort.. Last time we were there myself and a friend rented scooters and went about halfway to Havana on them.
