Two-year, single-network TV deal announced
Two-year, single-network TV deal announced
From Press Release
March 19th, 2006
05:00 PM EST
Waterloo, On. – The CPHL announced today the completion of comprehensive broadcast agreements that will benefit the league and its fans for the next two years. Under the new two year agreement CPHL games will be broadcast on the Spike TV network beginning in September 2006.
"CPHL's new network agreement marks a historic moment for the entire Fantasy community," said CPHL Chairman and CEO Dayel Peterson. "This is a major accomplishment for the CPHL GMs, agents and the Commissioners that have made this sport what it is today. It represents a significant reward for the competitive fantasy hockey world our fans have come to expect. It also validates the marketing and production enhancements our current media partners have brought to the sport.
"The new broadcast partnership is also good for the fans because they will have so much more CPHL content from a player’s perspective," said Peterson.
The CPHL expands its relationship with CalgaryPuck, while welcoming Spike into the family," said CPHL Vice President of Operations Cameron Schuler the 2nd. "By signing deals with a media company that sees itself as a Mans domain, the CPHL will meet the growing nationwide fan demand for more CPHL content for the next two years," Schuler said.
"Spike is extremely excited to begin its relationship with the CPHL for the next two years, and come 2008 be known as the official television home of Fantasy Hockey, by far the most played online game in this country," said Spike TVs President Doug Herzog. "Our production team has done an amazing job over the last few years to put Spike TVs broadcasts on par with America's most popular channels, and we look forward to pushing the production envelope further as we move forward."
The deal between the Spike TV network and the CPHL is a two year package which will run between the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 seasons.
The financial breakdown is as follows:
Total financial value: $640,000,000 over 2 years or $10,000,000 per team per year. $1,000,000 of the fee per team will be allotted to the Farm Teams. Each CPHL team will have a salary cap of $58,000,000 plus the $9,000,000 TV allotment for a total of $67,000,000 for the next two years.
As part of the deal Spike TV demanded that the Cheese rule be modified to allow for more player movement, and the CPHL agreed. The Cheese rule will be changed to allow each team a Maximum of $18,000,000 per team in trade limits, up from $12,000,000 the last two years.
Spike TV and the CPHL will drop the Rookie All Star game as part of the deal as Spike thought the idea looked to “Basketball”.
The CPHL has also agreed in part to eliminate the yearly Waiver Draft in September. It was determined that the draft made little or no difference and with increased Cap and Cheese the draft would no longer be required.
The new deal takes effect on July 1st, 2006.

Great work on the new deal, cap at 67 million and Cheese rule up to 18 million sounds about right. Also eliminating the waiver draft was a good move, that basically had zero impact. Good Job! Thumbs up from Los Angeles.

Well no doubt this deal will make many happy, doesn't really impact my team so I really don't care. Believe it or not, no waiver draft is actually going to benefit the CPHL's #####tiest team the Devils as I no longer have to worry about my 23 year old guys in the minors and losing them. Gives me some negotiating leverage on those players.
One rule I think we should look at is to expand ECHL rosters from 15 to 20 players. No limits was bad as teams could hoard all the prospects, but 15 is too restrictive to a rebuilding team. It's your allotted number of picks so if you do collect a few extra picks you can run out of spots for players. If the limit is a bit higher it allows me to take a few late round swings in hopes I can land a late round gem. I mean theres no shortage of GM's offering me 13-5th round picks for one player. Lets face it half of this league has a f|_|ck the draft attitude anyway, so I should be allowed to take some of their extra picks and use them if I want. In my opinion 5 extra ECHL spots would help me out greatly, but would have little or no effect on the rest of the league like a small protected list waiver draft, or lower cap.

Under the new deal, the Florida Panthers actually have a chance at keeping the current 2005-06 team together. After all of the hardwork, it would be a shame fro GM Penney to have to sell off some of his players to meet the cap requirement.
The Florida Panthers would like to thank all those involved with the process and they have high hopes for the 2006-07 season.

Calculations have been made and the Florida Panthers are extremely happy that they will be able to keep ALL of their current players. But that's not all, the Panthers have been preparing all season long for next year and because of this they will actually have a higher cap next year than last year.
The Panthers will have a cap of $80.45mill to start next season. It includes: $9.2mill coming from other teams and $4.25 in sponsorship money.

Isn't that 3 years?
What about sponsorships? Are we still going to have them?

If they do stick around, I hope there is some change in the way they are done. Especially POW and POM money seem to go to the already *have* teams. The teams with highly ranked players get the POW and thus more money to get better. Just take a look at the top teams money from the league and you see where POW money ended up.
I like a reward system, but I would also like every team to have a good chance to be rewarded.
Did Spike ask for any considerations regarding ratings, and when they will be available. And whether or not the midseason rerates would be warrented again like last season. Will the Spike viewers demand more rating changes? Do they have their own system they want to use?

Spike had no say on the POW and POM awards. Of course if you are a committed GM making your team better there should be some reward. There were quite a few non playoff calibre teams that benefitted from the awards as well. I dont know how the league could award players who arent performing well....its one of those things. They will stay, and probably will stay close to as is. The commissioners will review those over the summer.
The ratings of the players are the sole responsibility of the CPHL. We will not use outside sources for ratings and will endeavour to have ratings adjusted over the summer once again. As with the NHL there are always a few surprises during the playing year. The Commissioners "may" determine to allow some of those surprises in rerates during the year. It will be at the Commissioners discretion. Over the first 4 years we think we have got close to proper ratings...and with another summer to check players out we feel we will be better than most...but again its all rhetoric as theres always something that buggers ratings up.

I 100% agree with this. No harm going to a 20 max, or even a 30 max for that matter. Don't see what's wrong with some teams hoarding prospects if that's what they choose to do.
Anyway, it's good to hear a deal was reached. With an increased cap, increased Cheese rule, and the same sponsorships some teams may have a $90 million payroll. That's NFL level.
