Well, considering all the other help people have been able to provide on here, I have a bit of a conundrum myself. I'm looking at picking up a snowmobile this year, and using it mainly for backcountry shuttles. It would have to be big enough for 2 people while possibly towing another, and powerful enough to get us all to the top of a very large mountain at near breakneck speeds.

I came across a 2003 Arctic Cat ZR900 Sno Pro that the guy will sell "for a reasonable offer". It apparently has been hopped up to 190HP (is that a lot???). He said it was worth around 12K new.

So my question is: What's this thing worth? Is it the sled for me? I have absolutely no idea when it comes to sleds and what they do, the intended purpose of each model, yada yada yada.

Any suggestions?

I don't know anything about snowmobiles, but it seems to me that a beginner probably shouldn't be flying over mountains at breakneck speeds, especially with 2 other people in tow.

190hp sounds like a pretty powerful machine.

Edit: Just so I don't sound like someone's Grandma with my "you shouldn't do that sonny boy" :darnkids: I looked it up.

It's a "high performance" machine right out of the factory and that's with 150 horsepower. It weighs 516 pounds. It doesn't have a top speed listed, but I would think that it could go really fast.

Not to hijack the thead but my wife's family are looking to come out for a snowmobile holiday this winter. Any suggestions for places that are relatively close (3-5 hours from Calgary)? We've heard Crowsnest Pass is good.

They'll haul out their machines, my wife and I will need rentals. We'd like to rent a chalet with room for 5-6 people, possibly a hot tub and it would be great if it had snowmobiling right from your door.

PS - yeah, that machine sounds pretty powerful!

Yeah, I've ridden before. Not lots, but hey I learn fast.

I need something for deep snow, not necessarily something that can climb a vertical cliff. Sounds like this thing might be able to achieve lift off at top speed, so unless the priceis right I'm not sure if this is the one.

I'm into motorcycles, not snowmobiles, but in either case, I wouldn't buy anything that was seriously modified.

What can I say Fotze, I have no kids and a well paying job. I put a chunk of money each payday into investments, then SPEND the rest. Maybe not the best way to prepare for the future, but man is it ever fun.

Hey Vulcan, is this thing going to explode on me??? The last thing I need is a 30km walk out of the back country because a piston went through the hood.

It sounds like he put a turbo in? Probably modified some engine parts too. So unless you know how to fix a mod'd engine, you might have problems.
