Yeah, that's something smart to promote. Like the idiots that ride motor cylcles need encouragement to do this crap? These idiots don't know they are inches from death every time they climb on one of those things and still they drive like they are invincible. I've seen photos of what is left of some of these idiots when they lose it, or when someone gives them a little nudge (and its guys like the one in this video that make people "wander" in their lane, constricting the hole) and its very disturbing. I wish I could post some of them. They would stop behavior like this, and people from eating for a few days.

That is an everyday occurence on LA Freeways - hell even the CHPs do it. It took me months to get used to driving along and then have a big old harley scare the **** out of me as it drove up beside me in my lane. Robby Kneviel (sp) was once asked what was one stunt he would never attempt - his reply - driving a bike on LA freeways.

Well, that's a hell of a lot crazier than your everyday businesswoman on a scooter here in Rome, but there are plenty of guys that drive their bikes like that here. I would just drop a 'meh' on the thread, but watching it from a seat that I'll never sit in warrants a 'holy crap, that guy is probably dead'.

I'm pretty sure they know it Lanny, and that's probably why they do it.
Extreme sports are called extreme for a reason.
Are they smart? No.
Are they fun? Sure are.

Is riding a motorbike fun? Sure is
Is it smart? Probably not, and definatley not when you do it like that, I'm pretty sure anyone who gets on a bike, especially someone with the skill to do that, knows how dangerous it can be.

I'm pretty sure lane cutting is actual legal in LA.

OK, I'm serious don't do this at home kids. The adrenaline rush is from watching not from doing. I see some lane splitting going on in Vancouver but this guy in Japan seems obviously nuts.

I understand not promoting this extreme riding style, what I don't understand is the resentment some N. Americans show to lane splitting and do your so called "wander". Japan and other countries seem to be content to stay in their own lanes and let the rider take his chances.

I have no problem with letting an idiot take chances with his own life.

When an idiot starts to take chances with my life, that is when I take issue.

I've been cut off before by a-holes on bikes lane splitting on deerfoot, or trying to change lanes by squeezing between me, and the car I am passing to the right right before that hole closes.

One mistake, and not only is that idiot thrown from his bike (hopefully to die a painful death), but potentially I, and other innocent drivers around me are put into a life threatening situation if a larger accident occurs.

I didn't watch the whole thing but early on he nearly gets hit by another biker doing the same thing. That would have been pretty funny.

Some of you guys would be simply flabbergasted at what happens when you

1) Allow lane splitting

2) Allow cars to completely disregard the fact that there are lanes AT ALL

Somehow, people get to where they are going in one piece. Mysteriously, the human race manages to live on.

Yeah, I'm really on my soapbox this morning. I just wanna shout from the rooftops that I've been in one of the craziest (driving) cities for 3 months and have yet to see an accident.

Amazing what happens when people master the art of paying attention to the road instead of relying on the government to make rules and praying that everyone follows them.

*disclaimer*

My last post did not endorse the crazy driver in the video. He's nuts. That'll get you killed. My post was aimed at the people that think that any form of lane splitting is crazy.

I'd agree for a car, but its a bike. You can ignore him and watch as he bounces off your windsheild if you please. A bike is going to have a very hard time hurting someone in a car.

Even if you are the posterboy for safe car driving, if you end up running over some moron sitting on the freeway because he got bounced from his crotchrocket doing some stupid stunt, it's probably going to affect you for the rest of your life. The only physical damage may be to your bumper, but killing someone, even if it's entirely his own fault, is gonna sting forever.

^Match point. On that point I agree completely. Just like those poor train drivers in Montreal and Toronto that get all the jumpers

You're wrong, plain and simple. I've seen the accident scene photographs from bikes that have been in accidents at high speed and its not pretty. There was one set, when the bike ended up in the passenger compartment of the car (no survivors). 500 pounds of hurtling metal can do a lot of damage to a car, and the distration it causes the drivers of other vehicles that puts their 4000+ cars and trucks into dangerous situations where others can get hurt/killed.

Bottom line here, that is a highly illegal act, one that endangers himself and every driver on the road he passes. I hope they caught this guy and gave him the jail time coming to him.

Unless the driver of the car the idiot on the bike cuts off swerves to get out of the way and hits someone else.

In a vaccuum, a bike hitting a car would be little different than a deer hitting a car. But Deerfoot is not a vaccuum, and there is no telling what most drivers would do in a panic situation.

Hitting a deer at speed is ugly too. Hell, hitting anything at speed is ugly. I saw pictures the other day of a Porsche that hit a chicken (insert chicken crossing the road joke) at over 120 mph (on US 60, for anyone familiar with Phoenix, which tells you how crazy this dude was) and the damage was equitable to a bird strike on a fighter jet. Completely blew out the guys windshield and filled the compartment with feathers and guts. The guy lost control of his car and ended up causing a significant tie-up on one of Phoeni's busier arteries.
