I know it's happened a few times this year, but the hurricane coverage on CNN right now is pretty amazing. Tune in and have a look at the reporters being pounded if you've got nothing better to do.

Looks like Alabama's going to get nailed.

It's a hell of a thing. 217 KM/H winds is unbelievable. Gusts up to 257.

Yeah that was some nasty looking stuff alright. Thank god it didnt hit New Orleans...if it had they were predicting deaths in the 10,000 range.

And after getting nailed with Frances remnants last week and some mind boggling flooding...here we go again down here....Ivan is taking dead aim at us again.

12"-18" of rain to fall by Saturday after starting later today.

The ground is so saturated around here already, this will devastate many folks...again. Im fine from floodoing being on high ground...but fully expect to lose water and electricity again sometime tonight/early tomorrow.

Just brutal weather all over the place.

This is the latest update from the National Weather Service...actually better than it was just a few hours ago.

IF IVAN FOLLOWS THE EXPECTED TRACK... RECORD RAINFALL THAT WOULD EQUAL OR EXCEED THAT FROM RECENT HURRICANE FRANCES IS POSSIBLE. THIS TRACK COULD PRODUCE RAINFALL AMOUNTS BETWEEN 3 AND 6 INCHES IN PIEDMONT LOCATIONS... 6 TO 10 INCHES IN THE FOOTHILLS NEAR THE HIGHER TERRAIN... AND MOUNTAIN TOTALS OF 8 TO 12 INCHES. SOME HIGHER PEAKS COULD SEE LOCALIZED 15 INCH TOTALS ALONG EAST OR SOUTH FACING SLOPES BY THE TIME THE EVENT WINDS DOWN.

RAINFALL OF THIS MAGNITUDE WOULD PRODUCE MAJOR AND PROLONGED FLOODING ACROSS THE REGION... ESPECIALLY IN THE NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS. AREAS INUNDATED BY FLOODWATERS DURING FRANCES WOULD LIKELY FLOOD AGAIN... AND THE FLOODING COULD EVEN BE WORSE THAN WITH FRANCES SINCE RIVERS AND STREAMS ARE STARTING OUT AT HIGHER LEVELS THAN BEFORE FRANCES. HEAVY RAINFALL COULD ALSO TRIGGER MUD AND ROCK SLIDES IN STEEP TERRAIN... AND COULD CAUSE DAMS TO FAIL FROM THE STRESS OF VERY HIGH WATER LEVELS.

Dams failing would be just brutal.

And Ivan is packing another threat...wind.

... HIGH WIND WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM EDT TONIGHT TO 6 PM EDT FRIDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG SC HAS ISSUED A HIGH WIND WARNING FOR THE MOUNTAINS OF THE CAROLINAS AND EXTREME NORTHEAST GEORGIA.

Great....gonna be a nasty ride the next few days down here.

Wouldn't they design the dams to withstand a full reservoir and then some. Also they would design them to not fail catastrophically like in the movies, but hey what do I know.
You would think.....but....this is about the most ass backwards place in North America. The infrastructure on alot of stuff is still 50's technology.

They predicted years ago that any significant flooding would cause the widespread flooding we witnessed last week. Yet they still didnt upgrade the pipes that washed away.

26 main lines were broken or completely missing parts of the pipe itself, all within 2 days of heavy water. They replaced the broken stuff with old technology.
