Default Sony copy control crap on CDs

I put a new CD in my computer today and it had (unbeknownst to me) that security thingamajig on it that is, umm, bad. Llike a virus or something, or a loophole for creeps and weenies to go through and foul up my computer. It was all over the news late last year.

Anyhow, the music started playing but the machine made a few beeps and boops and kind of froze up and then did some initializing and loading and a couple different windows popped up and finally a "do you agree to the terms?" window came up. By this time I figured out what was going on and said "no" to the "do you agree to the terms" question. The music stopped and the disc drive actually opened up, which was kind of spooky in a "this cd has some control over my computer and it's only been in there for 30 seconds" kind of a way.

So, am I screwed here? I did some looking around to figure out if I've been infected by something and the answer appears to be "yes". One article on MSNBC said that removing this thing is akin to "delicate heart surgery" or some such thing. I didn't like the sounds of that.

Has anyone else had to deal with this thing?

Funny thing is that it's a "My Morning Jacket" cd. A bunch of reefermadnessed hairfarmers from Kentucky. I doubt they had a hand in this security garbage. EFF OFF Sony.

This page might help you out in getting rid of the copy protection rootkit.

The band was pretty angry about it. They even offered to personally burn and send copies to anyone who had problems with this garbage. Great band, great album.

According to the Sony Canada site (here), that CD wasn't released in Canada with the XCP copy protection. And even if it was, all titles with XCP were supposed to be pulled from store shelves before Christmas.

When are where did you get it? I'm just curious.

Perhaps the more computer savvy posters can confirm this - I was told to hold the 'Shift' key while inserting a copy-protected disk into my computer. This disables the auto-run so that the copy-protection software is unable to load onto your computer. True?

True.

Test it yourself, find a CD with something that you know always starts up as soon as you put it into the drive (i.e. MS Office), and do it once holding down the shift key (it shouldn't run) then a second time without holding the shift key and it should run.

(Personally, I turn off autorun, but I still always hold the shift key)
