Arroyo declares emergency in the Philippines

Philippines President Macapagal Arroyo declared a state of emergency Friday, after her army said it had prevented a coup plot.

Arroyo, who has survived two previous coup attempts, claimed the military had quashed a coup plot by some military officers and their men.
"There were a few who tried to break from the armed forces chain of command, to fight the civilian government and establish a regime outside the constitution,'' said Arroyo, who held a pre-dawn emergency meeting of her national security council. "We crushed this attempt.''

That's crazy. A girl I work with just went there last week. She's supposed to be staying for 6 weeks.

I bet she's a little freaked out right now.

Do a lot of people ever die during Phillippine coup attempts? One time the punishment for the officers attempting a coup was 20 pushups on the parade ground.

Half of the office I work in is Phillipino's. In fact one of the guys went back there to visit for a month last week, so they're all joking that he's behind it. They were telling me that the last time the government was over thrown that the bloodshed was pretty minimal, like 4 soldiers. They're optimisitc that this can be resolved peacefully though. I guess it puts things in perspective about how peaceful things are on our home soil.
