Default 10-Digit phone numbers coming

Quote:
In 2006, businesses and consumers in several regions of Ontario and Quebec will have to adopt 10-digit dialing – the area code followed by the phone number
Could Alberta be far behind??

From that same site:

Quote:
Toronto
In 2000, 10-digit dialing was introduced in the regions served by the 416 and 905 area codes in the Greater Toronto Area.
This allowed for the introduction of two new area codes to meet the growing demand for new telephone numbers.
10-digit local dialing has been successfully introduced in other major North American cities:
- Atlanta
- Baltimore
- Dallas
- Denver
- Fort Lauderdale
- Boston
- Philadelphia
- Houston
- Miami
- New York
- North Chicago
- Orlando
- Pittsburgh
- Vancouver

No big deal. If you've spent any time in the cities listed above, you get used to it pretty quick. With our area codes as they are it's not so bad.

Area code by burough, or suburb - now that's brutal.

It'll be awhile before Alberta gets on board. It would mean that Calgary would be big enough to require two area codes. With only a million population, it will take a long time.

Because there is little choice. Telephone companies are running out of numbers under the traditional system. Consumers now have more than one phone number - land lines, cell phones, fax lines etc. The demand for data being transmitted via phone lines has grown exponentially in recent years.

That is why Alberta now shares two area codes and will likely get more in the future. The problem is even more pronounced in high population centres like Vancouver, Toronto and big metro areas in the U.S.

It won't be unusual for big cities to have more than one area code. Some already do.

As per Telus, it'll be here by 2010, they say at the latest. Perhaps as soon as next year when number portability comes into play.

Because when more than 10,000,000 phone numbers exist in your local calling area, you have no choice.

Or, as I believe in the case of Alberta in a few years, rather than forcing a significant number of people to change their area codes again, Calgary and Edmonton will have seperate area codes overlayed onto the current format. Thus, Calgary will have numbers in the 403 area code, and numbers in the xxx area code, all of which will be local dialing.

Ottawa-Gatineau has two area codes (albeit divided upon provincial lines) but ten digit dialing is only used for long distance calls which can happen within the boundaries of the city. For example, it can be a long distance to call the far eastern suburbs of the city from the far western suburbs.

Just to nitpick: long distance is 11 digit dialing, not ten.
