Default Hindu's/Muslims stage protests against Valentines Day

Hardline Hindu and Muslim groups burned Valentine’s Day greeting cards on Tuesday and held protests across India against celebrating the festival of love, saying it was a Western import that spread immorality.

Saint Valentine’s Day has become increasingly popular in India in recent years, a trend led by retailers who do healthy business selling heart-shaped balloons and fluffy teddy bears.

But the growing popularity of the day in officially secular, but mainly Hindu India has also sparked protests which have sometimes turned violent.

Groan...

Why must they always resort to "burning things". Whatever happened to peaceful protest? Why is there so much hate? It's getting a little old...

Although I don't agree with the form of expression that they used to display their displeasure, or even the argument they are using ... I have to agree with the overall idea that Valentines Days Sucks... Its a complete waste of time and money
Causes unecessary stress if you are single and unecessary expense if you are in a relationship

Its to be expected..there is a lot of cultural westernization going on in India right now, so the radical traditionalists are trying to fight against it. They will fail though, they are up against influences like bollywood, which seems to get more westernized all the time.

I don't think Muslims and Hindu's are protesting and rioting because Valentines Day causes stress.

As a sidebar, in the LA Times this morning, among other things:

At the same time, the survey found that spending a few frivolous dollars can advance the cause of romance. Buying four dozen roses "just because" was considered "wonderfully romantic" by 69% of respondents, as was being taken out to a nice meal by 94%.

I don't mind Valentines Day. I know I'm being sucked into a commercial vortex but I go willingly . . . . . Mrs. Cowperson woke up this morning to a card and a gift basket I had left behind and I will return tonight with armfuls of flowers. I know she will smile. It's all good.

Someone should print a cartoon with the ba$t*** son of Abraham holding a valentines day card holding hands with a Jewish bride - then duck cause someone might assasinate you for it or burn down your house.

Sorry to vent but this whole bullshat with this and the cartoon really ticks me off how the western world are taking a very Spanish (Spain not South America etc) approach and bending over and taking it from a group of malcontent delinquent brats. If you dont like freedom of speech or equality among the sexes simply say so - dont disguise it as some bs religious garbage. If Al-Jazeera was to show a Christian being be-headed (oops alredy happened) or a cartoon with Jesus holding a bomb I wouldnt care cause my beliefs are based on faith and not golden calfs.

Remind me again how the western world are bending over and taking it from a group of malcontent delinquent brats. I mean really, has this had any effect on your life at all? I know it hasn't for me, so I don't feel like I'm being bent over by anyone simply because they want to protest or riot in the streets in some city 10 thousand miles away from me.

What would you have us do that is not "Spanish(?)"? Should someone bomb New Delhi because a few of the locals don't like Valentine's Day?

Valentine's Day, ugh... for the record, love is a manufactured concept made up by Hallmark to sell greeting cards, and candy. Back in origins of human civilization there was no love, just lust for procreation. Until one day the executives of Hallmark were sitting around a boardroom table trying to figure out how to get sales higher in the drab month of February. One of them came up with the idea of “Valentine’s Day”. Then they thought “St. Valentine’s Day” would be better as no one knows who this Valentine guy is, however if you say he’s a saint, people will believe you and not look it up as it has to do with religion.

Then, a nice little side effect happened for Hallmark. While this “holiday” took off, these newly termed “lovers” were buying cards, but those who didn’t have someone to buy crap for were getting depressed, not to mention that Valentine’s Day turned into the day that had the most couples break up over the year. For these reasons suicide rates skyrocketed in mid-February, which means what for Hallmark? SYMPATHY CARDS!!! Sales skyrocketing because there’s a display of Valentine’s Day cards, and what’s right next to them “our deepest sympathy” cards. Coincidence, nope not at all!

Only in our society would we celebrate a holiday that causes more harm that good, that encourages people to end their relationships, and pushes people over the edge thinking “hearts are red, blood is read, and if I slit my wrists I’ll see red from my heart and maybe that’s what love feels like!” Was it not Trent Reznor that wrote “I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel”? That song was a reflection after what??? After the character in the song/on the concept album, committed suicide!

For all those that say Happy Valentine’s Day, for all those that think they’re “in love”, for all those that are “happy” I say, Bah-Humbug,

Bite me arse!

Your Pal,

MQS

the article states how popular valentine's day is getting over there. Obviously that means this is a small group of traditionalists, not some widespread anti-west movement. And if you want to whine about people using religion as an excuse for bigotry, there's plenty of people right here in the good old west to whine about too.

Man, the "problems" of these Islamic people are getting really old. It's like the OJ Simpson case years ago. After a while people either just don't care or start laughing at it all. I think most of the non-Islamic population of the world is basically laughing at the Islamic people at this point. I basically see Islam as a running joke now. (Sorry, please don't burn my house down and kill my people in the name of peace.)

This garbage has gone on long enough. I can't remember anything western based that didn't offend Islam and didn't result in needless destruction.

Yes the needless destruction of Valentine Day Cards!?!?! Think of the Children!

The needless slagging on the Muslim religion has gone on long enough every time I see that all muslims get thrown in together it makes me cringe I hope people realize that there are numerous types and it mainly one that has the extremists in that portion. But it's not like any other religion has/had/will have any crazy extremists right?

Maybe I'm in the minority with my thoughts, but............

If you don't like a certain holiday, why not just not celebrate it?

Some people in this world need to relax, sit down, grab a beer and chill the hell out..........life is too short.

I prefer the idiots that burn themselves in protest. I wish more of these people would use that tactic. A self-solving problem.
