Default RE: Upcoming UFA's

GM's need to understand that agents have little to no desire to negotiate a players contract that is looking to become UFA at seasons end.

Where is the incentive? Agents are not here to make your job easier in building your clubs, in fact, almost the opposite.

So unless you are prepared to blow the doors off a player with an offer, do NOT get upset when that agent/player refuse to negotiate a new deal at this time.

Interesting advice, but as expected quite one sided.

Is the agents job not to get the best deal for his client?

What happens when a new CBA comes down with lower salary caps, and there's less money to toss around?

It was anounced several weeks ago that the league was in its fianl year of the CBA, with decline in attendance and Media revenue, it would only make sense that we will be forced to work with a reduction in caps space. As was the case several years ago when the overall cap was reduced in successive years from 65M.

It may be the best interest of an agent to sign his clients earlier. As a GM I am willing to pay more now to reduce uncertainty going forward. In fact, I've offered a couple players contracts which take into account where their market value will be in the summer.

I do agree, it doesn't make sense to get heated at either the agents or the GM, after all its just a process of debating a players value. Both the GM and the Agent have their respective camps to defend.

The CBA bull**** last year almost ruined the NHL for me. I hope the same doesn't happen here.

I can see both points of view actually. If a guy can become a free agent and I think there would be a bidding war for him then why not take my chances in the offseason. There is a few teams with a crap load of money. Take Corey Cross as a example.

It is a wonder that agents constantly drive up the prices on each contract, understandable from their point of view, but still curious when the cap is going down next year for everyone. Seems like the same thing happened in the NHL as well where agents demanded ridiculous contracts for players like Holik when there was no money being made in the league. Maybe we should have a 25% rollback on all salaries to really "simulate" the NHL along with the one year work stoppage.

Well how many teams in this league have 15 to 20 million dollars of unused money being spent? Theres money for player of the week awards, allstar appearances, and bigger payouts for winning playoff rounds. Than theres sponsorships which can payoff if clubs applied for the right deals. I think the whold idea of cap going down is a myth. It's the T.V. money which is rumored to be dropping from 3 to 2 million per year. So big whoop, any team that makes the playoffs will have as much or more money to spend next year as they do this year. I don't blame agents in the least for at least wanting to test the free agency waters. NHL players opt for the money 90% of the time so why should CPHL players be any different.

You make a good point. However, there are other factors at work as well - specifically the IR players: Currently there is $1742M on active rosters and 177M on the IR (league totals) If you take league averages (AHL and CPHL salaries of .8M and 2.48M respectively) thats approximately 72 players on IR and (assuming a one for one call up) it works out to 120M to be added to CPHL overall salaries.
So total commited CPHL $s is 1742+120M = $1862M
61M * 32 teams is $1952 a difference of 90M

So, even taking into account the playoff bonuses, sponsorships and other awards it works out to amounts in the neighbourhood of 150M split by 32 teams, or approximately 5M per team. While I expect every agent to try and get the biggest slice of pie they can for their client, I argue that the pie might not be as big as anticipated. Sometimes those in the front of the buffet line get the most to eat.
I'm hungry now, I leave you all to digest that.

LOL...hey guys...no one tells an agent what to do in the NHL...except the players. Samne here. Everything about CBA, TV, is speculation at this point. Maybe a Lacrosse league will buy us out!

Sure but when was the last time we actually heard a player speak .

If you ask me the Agents all have some sort of mind control over the players. to agree with what ever they say..

Lots and lots of mind control drugs. Hence all the large contracts so we can afford these drugs.
