Flaming C history
Does anyone know, or can point me to a website or book, why when the Flames got moved to Calgary that they kept the name "Flames" instead of changing it to something else? (IE Nords-Avalance, Jets-Coyotes, etc.) Its for a paper i'm writing and I can only seem to find the origin of the Atlanta Flames name but not why they kept it.
Thanks

I've also heard we kept the name because we were granted the Olympics at the same time. Don't know if that is true. Or even if the info above is true.

The Flames were called the Flames before Calgary got the Olympics. The Flames came here with name intact in 1980 and the Olympic thing wasn't announced until October of 1981.

Now I was a 9 year old living in Winnipeg at the time............ but wasn't it normal for teams back then to keep the team name when they moved from one city to another?

I don't think that site is 100% accurate.
When Conn Smythe bought the Toronto St. Patricks, his first act was to rename the team after the Maple Leaf Regiment of the First World War, as well as for the maple leaf on the Canadian flag.
The current Canadian flag came more than 30 years after the Toronto Maple Leafs were named!
Also, the Nordiques the northernmost team in pro hockey? Quebec City is further south than Vancouver, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton to name a few.

yes and no, there have been teams that have kept franchise names
Brooklyn Dodgers/Los Angeles
New Orleans Jazz/Utah Jazz
but teams have changed the franchise name
Kansas City Scouts to Colorado Rockies to New Jersey Devils
but I agree most teams have kept the name of the moved franchise in the past

I thought I read somewhere (was only 4 at the time) that there was some sort of fan participation in picking the new name..a few years ago on here Reggie had recalled some of the options that could be potential new names...but in the end, the decision was to keep the exsisting name.

Well the organization did a better job keeping the name, then putting that horse as the official away logo in 2000. I will say the current red home jersey is the best jersey in the league by far, too bad reebok is going to ruin it.

People always seem to forget that Calgary had a major fire in 1886 that destroyed half the town.....it's the reason why sandstone became a such a popular building material afterwards.

I vaguely remember at the time they kept the name because they felt it was a tie-in to the oil patch (ie. the flaring of gas).
There was a contest to name the time as I recall. I was all for the "Chinooks," but I'm sure they would've been the "Shnooks" in Edmonton. Thank goodness they remained the Flames.

Now if the Toronto team decided to use the harp from this flag, I think it would've been a lot more suitable, given the dramatic music that accompanies the soap opera that the Leafs have become, and the dramatic music that should be played during all the player/coaches whining sessions about the refs/schedule/younger players not respecting old player rants.
As for Flames names, I was talking to my uncles and dad last night...I think "Cowboys" were in the mix..maybe even "Stampeders", both in tribute to previous semi pro teams.

There was an article posted here a long time ago that talked about how they were ideas bounced around but in the end, the name was kept. Atlanta's Flames came from the burning of Atlanta. In Calgary, all the oil and gas burning worked for the Flames as well.
Speaking of the Atlanta Flames...what does the Thrashers have to do with Atlanta anyway?

state bird isnt it?
and while were on the subject, one of the original site options for the saddledome was firepark, overlooking memorial dr.
someone also said that the flames have enquired about that site once again for a possible new arena down the road...

The Nordiques (WHA) were in the league before any other Canadian team. Since all the other cities at that time where in the States, well, you know, Northeners.

Too lazy to change the ballclubs name when it relocated to Atlanta from Boston by way of Milwaukee.
