Instant Reaction: Flames fall short against Rangers

The Calgary Flames and New York Rangers clashed in Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, with both teams playing on the back half of back-to-back sets with travel. The game was pretty competitive, but a five-on-three power play and a few key defensive lapses were the difference in this contest.

FN’s mid-season Flames prospect updates: Gavin White

Gavin White is one of the Calgary Wranglers’ newest additions and has made a good transition into this lineup as one of their regular defencemen. White came to the Wranglers in an AHL trade for Jeremie Poirier in early February.

After NCAA scoring leader Wyttenbach meets up with Flames, could contract be on tap?

The way Ethan Wyttenbach’s season has been going, no one would have been surprised if he showed up at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night with his equipment in tow.

After all, the debate is already underway over whether the 19-year-old Long Island native is ready to make the jump to the bigs.

That’s what happens when you go from fifth-round draft pick to Hobey Baker finalist as a freshman – a journey that will lead to fascinating year-end discussions with the Flames concerning his plan moving forward.

'Really Cool Time'

On the heels of one of the best freshman regular seasons in recent college hockey history, Ethan Wyttenbach took time for some face time Tuesday at Madison Square Garden.

The Flames prospect and Hobey Baker Award candidate was on-hand for Calgary’s contest against the Rangers, and dressed in a red Flames hoodie, Wyttenbach was all smiles when holding court with Calgary’s senior hockey operations staff in the press box.

“It's awesome,” the fifth-round pick from 2025 said Tuesday evening during a quick intermission conversation. “I mean, obviously haven't gotten a chance to catch a game, so I think when I saw the game on the schedule, I kind of had it circled and was lucky enough it worked out, but obviously super-excited to be here and see everyone.

“I know Matt Coronato pretty well. So being able to watch him live is really cool.”

Buyer’s Remorse: Which trades will playoff contenders regret making?

Edmonton Oilers

Trade in question: Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach for Andrew Mangiapane and conditional 2027 first-round pick

The Flames have retained salary five times under Craig Conroy (and maxed out their retention slots twice)

There’s an old saying in sports that ownership likes to keep the money on the field, or on the ice, in the case of hockey. As such, teams try not to spend money on players not playing for them, such as buying out deals, burying contracts in the AHL, or retaining salary in trades.
But five times in the past three years, and six times total, the Calgary Flames have chosen to retain salary in a swap. Five of the retained salary trades were conducted by current general manager Craig Conroy

What happened to the Devils? Their rebuild looked pretty solid, and they seemed to be on the path of being the next up-and-comer about 3 years ago. Now, here they are, not in the playoffs again, no improvement from last year, and a lineup (above) that is not all that impressive at all.

Meier is 29. Hischier and Bratt are 27. Even Hughes and Mercer are 24. They should be fully in their competitive window by now. I don't think we can say it's a failed rebuild yet, but it's heading in that direction a this point.

One of the few times I've checked the skating speed stats and the Flames are quicker than their opponent.

They were first in the Met when Hughes stabbed himself. Were out of the playoffs by the time he came back. Never recovered.

The lesson I suppose is not to do a hand stand using drinking glasses as supports.

Do it against the Islanders or the Wings, teams that are not a threat to our draft position.

I hope Coleman, Coronato and Gridin all find a way onto the score sheet.

Man Huska really doesn't want to play Parekh and Brzustewicz at the same time for some reason

Neither would I. That a recipe for a cave in. They are both talented but they both need support that the other guy can't give yet.
