Default Brad Treliving is no good?

Brad in the hot seat right now in Toronto..

His trades for Carlo and Laughton are classic. Have a winning team? Trade for 'leadership depth', clouding the leadership group that actually got you into a winning position in the first place. In doing that simultaneously lose out on draft opportunities to bring in younger, cap-friendly skill.

This guy is so screwed.. his cupboards are bare and the 'leadership depth' he brought in is also on the trade block. Knowing him though he'll probably leave without a word and get a promotion somewhere else in the league.

Hey, I'm not bitter at all! Haha. It's quite funny to me watching this happen to the leafs.

Yeah, I have no doubt that Treliving didn't 'leave' Calgary, he was not invited back.

I hope he is the GM in Edmonton next, so he can add Let McDavid walk for nothing to his resume.

That and then he can ride off into the sunset and start the succession plan to take over the Boston Pizza empire

I can't see Treliving getting another GM job once his time with the Maple Leaf's inevitably comes to an end.

His legacy will always be inheriting the best parts of his teams (Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano, Matthews, Marner, Nylander) and accomplishing SFA with all of that talent.

Pretty sure we know he was offered a contract, and chose not to sign and left.

That goes against everything we've heard.

The way Tre operates adds up quickly. That said the Leafs were probably the toughest matchup for the Panthers last year.

Mistakes Tre keeps repeating:
  • Overpaying for value contracts with term(Hamonic, Carlo, Laughton)
  • Letting star players leave without replacing them(Gaudreau, Marner)
  • Prioritizing short term value show me UFA deals for depth players when his teams have cap space(Kleinberg, Bertuzzi, Domi, Gudbranson)
  • Ignoring the age curve(Tanev, OEL, Kadri, Huberdeau)

Tossing 3rd round and later draft picks like confetti for 7/8 UFA dmen.

That and overall terrible, terrible asset management.

I'll admit that I was a Tre fan for most of his tenure here. Even the Huberdeau/Tkachuk swap I thought was a win at the time. I even liked the Neal and Brouwer signings at the time, they obviously didn't age well. I never liked the draft picks for depth Dmen but I thought he made some good trades that were counterpoint to that, and expecting a GM to hit 100% of the time is never realistic. I thought he was dealt a bad card with Gaudreau, but I hated the 1st rounder to get rid of Mony.

His job in Toronto though just seems to have taken all the bad and rolled it into his entire scope of work there.

EDIT: I should add his coaching choices ruined a good core and probably directly led to not developing Bennett properly.

I always got the impression that Treliving managed from his ivory tower. There seemed to be continuous gripes between players and coaches and he never got off from his chair to get involved until it boiled over. Conroy seemingly confirming that he made deals in isolation without getting them involved (paraphrasing), also spoke to a guy who thought highly of himself and not so much decision making by committee. I guess that's all well and good if you're all round great, but he evidently wasn't.

Glad to see Toronto got the full Treliving experience. At least his screw over was brief for them.
