Sheldon Souray's stint in Toronto has come to an end after 19 games and 8 points. Souray was acquired before the New Year from San Jose in a deal for Roman Cechmanek at a time when the Leafs defenseman were dropping like flies. Now that Redden is healthy, Pitkanen is returning soon, and the Leafs have fallen way out of the playoff race, Souray became available.

In return for Souray the Leafs acquired a 1st round pick from the Quebec Nordiques. Souray will now anchor their blueline while the Leafs will pick 5 times in the 1st round of the 2006 draft.

The Leafs GM had this to say about the deal. "We were looking to get a player for Sheldon but had no problem settling for a draft pick. In the end we have to look at the big picture. We now have 2 great assets for the future that we've gotten as a result of trading Roman Cechmanek."

Dont think it should be a problem as he is still a RFA n the offseason. Correct me if im wrong?

Players become a UFA when they are 29 years of age or older.

No, he's 28, so on July 1st he's 29 which would make him a UFA. Applies to all players who are currently 28 and in the last year of a contract....Which isn't many guys who are very good!!

The Nordique will refrain from commenting on the deal, as it is still under review by the league. Once approved, the Nordique will be more than happy to comment on the deal.

THIS JUST IN!!!
The deal has passed through the CPHL's Head Office, and has been approved. The Quebec Nordique couldn't be more exstatic. The team has made amazing progress in the past few months on paper, and look to translate that success in a few more dubs in the win column.

We ain't done yet. More deals to come.
