News Roundup

Flames prospect Theo Stockselius named to Sweden’s junior team for November event

The youngest player in the Calgary Flames organization will have a chance to make his case for a spot on Sweden’s national junior team next month.
On Wednesday, Sweden’s national ice hockey association announced the team’s roster for the upcoming 5 Nations event in Piestany, Slovakia in early November. That event features under-20 teams from Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Czechia and Slovakia, and it’s the last under-20 event before the World Junior Championship event over the December holidays.

Has anything gone well for the Flames to start the season?

The Calgary Flames’ start to the season has been tough to watch. The on-ice product has fallen short of even the lowest expectations. Even if you’re someone who wants the Flames to tank for a draft pick, you were probably hoping the games would at least be somewhat competitive — or that there’d be something interesting worth following.

Jets vs. Flames prediction, odds, picks

At 8 p.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 24, Kyle Connor and Adam Klapka will go toe-to-toe in a contest between the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames at Canada Life Centre.

We need more offence, bring up Hunt! lol. It’s funny that the Flames are so ‘systems’ based that it has stifled creativity, but they choose to double down with an opportunity for another grinder (Hunt) to be inserted. At least he brings tenacity and energy to a group sagging. Luck has to smile on Flames at some point, Go Flames!!

Maybe he’ll play on the first line.

I think this will be the game we score more than 1 goal!!

Probably catching the Jets at the right time, and honestly the Flames are playing well just can't score. I think they're slowly coming out of this and they get the win tonight.

Looks like that Bean/Weegar pairing has settled down the defense setup for now.

Hanley helping Parekh to a more stable game, and Bean filling in in the top four above his playing weight.

Doesn't change the fact that Calgary has 3 top four defenseman, but at least the tire fire is out!

Sad that this early in the season, I'm not all that fired up about watching a game.

I'm hoping they turn this around, but its just not good hockey to watch.

I'm old, crabby, and gone too many of these sprints to stumble. People fondly remember the young guns era, where people claimed at least they worked hard. But they didn't, at least the Flames aren't running promo pieces on a new young guns era.

Read the Flames are sniffing around a Columbus 2020 first rounder (Chinakhov) who didn’t pan out for them. Was healthy scratched at the end of last year and has been playing 4th line this year when not scratched.

Don’t we have enough of those guys? Reclaimation projects sitting in other teams press boxes.

I anticipate very few eyes on this one with a certain other big time sporting even capturing the hearts of most Canadians, and a few of us who live in the USA.

I never cheer for a loss, but man it is hard to get excited about this team until they figure it out, and no one on the flames (with Wolf being the exception) has a very high GAF through this point of the season.

Call me crazy, but I think we score 3 tonight. Don't know if it'll be enough to win though.

Quote:
tank(v.)
1863, "plunge (someone or something) into a tank;" 1886, "throw or cause (liquid) to flow into a tank;" from tank (n.1).

The meaning "to lose or fail" attested from 1976 in a general sense, apparently originally in tennis jargon, specifically in an interview with Billie Jean King in Life magazine, Sept. 22, 1967:

"When our men don't feel like trying," she says, "They 'tank' [give up]. I never tanked a match in my life and I never saw a girl do it. The men do it all the time in minor tournaments when they don't feel like hustling. You have to be horribly competitive to win in big-time tennis."
It is sometimes said to be from boxing, in some sense, perhaps from the notion of "taking a dive," but evidence for this is wanting. Related: Tanked; tanking. Adjective tanked "drunk" is from 1893.

I approve. Kirkland has been pretty bad and Sharangovich has something to prove - lets see if he can.
