News Roundup
5 Things - Flames @ Mammoth
1. On To The Next
Just like that, the Flames are on the road again.
And tonight in Salt Lake City, they'll take part in their third (road) home opener in the past eight days as they make their one and only regular-season trip to Utah.
It's another quick turnaround, and as the team left Calgary late Tuesday evening, the focus is on the next challenge.
Mammoth, Flames continue search for offensive consistency
Two offensively challenged teams meet when the Utah Mammoth face the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City.
The Mammoth have only scored five goals in their opening three games, so it’s no surprise they lost two of those contests.
“I don’t think we’ve been nearly hard enough around the net. I think that’s a big thing,” Utah center Barrett Hayton said. “That’s another big piece of our team, being able to have two guys inside, compete around the net, be hard in there. We’ve just been too perimeter. When we’ve gotten around the net, we haven’t been hard enough. We’ve got to fight around there.”
Third periods emerging as the Flames’ weakness through four games
Gang, there’s an old saying that comes to mind following four games of the Calgary Flames’ 2025-26 season: you are what you repeatedly do.
Through four games, the Flames are a team whose performance has varied tremendously from period to period, with one consistent thread being subpar third periods.
Instant Reaction: Golden Knights seize victory from the Flames
The Calgary Flames hosted the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night at the Saddledome. The Flames got off to a good start. At one point, they led by a 2-0 score and had a handle on the game. And then, gradually, they didn’t.
Flames lack finishing touch again in loss to Golden Knights
Four games in, a troubling pattern has emerged for the Calgary Flames.
They just can’t finish.
Games, that is.
While finishing around the net was the No. 1 concern going into the season, at issue of late has been the team’s inability to finish off opponents.

My tickets have been secured I will be in attendance. Let's hope the Flames do better, this year, against the Utah Clubbers. Last season sucked.

Does Parekh stay in the lineup or take another break to watch a game?

What's the point of having him sit... I would argue that the regulars have been way worse this season (Weegar for one)... at this point, we need to give him more opportunities on the power play and also in other situations to start to get experience as the season goes on ... sitting doesn't accomplish anything at this point. Which as always means the Flames will do the opposite and sit him likely. They never call me for my opinion. LOL

Ok ... we need some entertainment (outside of the game which has been lacking this year) ... on what shot does the Mammoth score against Cooley? How many goals will he give up in the first period? Does he last the whole game?
I will start off ...
Mammoth score on their 3rd shot (only because two of them were long range dump ins and even I could save those ones)
Mammoth score 3 goals in first period
Cooley will last the whole game in a 7-2 bloodbath because Wolf has to sit after the heavy workload so far.
As you can tell, I have zero confidence in Cooley ... hope he proves me wrong.

Haven't won in Utah yet. Small sample size, but still.

I doubt he sits another game unless he's got a nagging injury. He is #4 on the depth chart behind Weegar, Andersson, and Bahl.

I assumed this was a home game. Playing back to back in 2 different cities just days after 3 in 4 days in 3 different cities seems too ridiculous to be true.

They don't get the luxery of 2 games in 6 days to start the season like Team Golden Boy.

I would change the forward lines as:
Zary - Kadri - Coronato
Gridin - Frost - Sharangovich
Farabee - Backlund - Coleman
Lomberg - Honzek - Klapka

The Flames have a toothless offense. The Likes of Sharangovich, Frost and Zary need to start scoring.

Things are looking grim early.
In my opinion, this is the easiest game left in October. After this, it is Vegas - Jets - Habs - Jets - Rangers - Leafs - Sens.
It may be arguable who is weaker than whom, but I pick Utah as being weaker right now than any of those other teams. However, Flames play tonight on the 2nd of a back-to-back (thankfully the last for this month!), having to use the backup as Wolf has played too much already, they haven't won in Utah (and generally seem to have a hard time with them lately), and are facing a grumpy Utah team that is feels it hasn't had a good start either. That's tough sledding tonight, but not impossible.
Flames don't have the ability (IMO) to go on a long enough run to overcome a tough October. If the rest of the games left in October results in more losses than wins (especially losses without any OT points), the season may be lost in this month, nevermind looking at American Thanksgiving.
I think last season's relatively easy start helped instill that 'belief' in them, and it snowballed all season long. I have yet to see the Flames play a full game so far this season - arguable that they even put in 2 full periods in any single game so far. If these losses accumulate, it is going to be harder and harder to pull together and really consistently put in those efforts as they need to.
Is this the start of bottoming-out? Or will this tough start galvanize them? I have my own guess here, but I guess we will see.
Also, I love the Coleman interview. He is captain material through and through with the way he thinks the game and speaks. Not saying he should be captain over Backlund, or that the Flames should re-sign him and make him Captain after Backlund retires (though I wouldn't mind this at all - young teams need solid leaders), but I am just simply admiring the leadership and accountability that he brings. I would want every player in the locker room to have his character.

Keep playing the kids.. results of games really don't matter to me.
Hopefully the veterans maintain some value to be traded.

Quickly approaching that territory where all I care about is seeing the young players take steps abd improve and put up points.
Hold the course, even through the growing pains.

I'd take the over on 3.5 GA.
Hopefully the Flames can find a way to score 4 tonight. On the bright side I really liked Coronato's game lately. Honzek has been around it, and Andersson can't keep missing the empty net. Moreover, the 4th line has been awesome. So the wins are coming if they stick with it.
I still need to see more from Kadri, and Sharangovich up front. i think everyone will slow better once Hubby's back.
Finally, I can't wait for the meltdown when/if see Bean playing in Miromanov's spot tonight.

Pressure is on Cooley to have a good game in net, assuming he's listening to the rumours and pundits. That pressure could work either way, he buckles and allows an embarrassing # of goals, or he get's his 'superlative AHL' style back.
Just watch a Cooley vs Wolf goalie controversy emerge
