Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2025 - Round 30
Welcome to the annual Calgarypuck Prospect Poll!
As per usual ...
1. Rank the prospects as you like. Upside, chances, or trade value
2. I will try and do one a day which should get us to mid to late August
3. Graduates and/or runoffs will be determined in each case
4. Please don't complain that the polls are going to deep. We go until all the prospects are ranked, so don't vote if you don't want to.

Do a showdown bracket here.
Seed the top 4 and do the 1 vs 4...2 vs 3, than the winners square off, and another third place match.

I leave them open now.
I don't want to rob someone of the ability to vote in each round even if a winner has already been declared.

What's with the Matveiko hype (round 30 lol)?
In the Russian tier-1 Jr league, had 28pts in 48 games in his 18 year old season. He'll be 19 years old next week.
For comparison, Parker Bell (I didn't vote for either) had 49pts in 64 WHL games in his 18 year old season. And he's a 6'5" Western Canadian.

Matveiko seems to have put on 30-40 lbs over the last two years. Recency bias as well, as he came out as the 1C for his MHL team.
Him and Bell are both extreme long shots, so it probably doesnt matter.

You need to pair this feeling with an extremely strong opinion that has no factual basis for maximum effect!

I think part of the intrigue with Matveiko is that some scout believed so strongly that there is potential there that CC acquired an extra 7th rounder just to get him. It wasn’t a case of already having the pick and just burning it . I think typically a team or scout would just set a reminder once in a while to check in on the player’s progress and see if there is a chance to sign them as an undrafted player is a few years, but in this case, they weren’t willing to risk it.
Not to risk coming off sounding like an appeal to authority, I think having a qualified professional like an NHL scout feeling that strongly gives him some bonus points for me when trying to sort out these long shots that are left to choose from. Having said that, I haven’t picked him yet, but he has been a consideration for the past few rounds.

Bell vs Matveiko vs Hurtig for me.
I voted for Bell as I do think he can be MORE than a 4th liner. Great skater, great size, good hands too.
Matveiko looks like he can be middle-six, but so much unknown about this kid. Recent growth spurt might see him take huge strides in the near future as his coordination catches up to his body.
Hurtig looks like he can end up as a very good defensive defencemen. His offence is rather pedestrian, but I think there is enough there to legitimately put his ceiling as that of a #4 guy paired with an offensive puck-mover. More likely will end up as a bottom-pairing defencemen if he makes it, IMO, but who knows?
I went with Bell as I think he has the best combination of having the best shot to make it vs chance at becoming an impact player. It was him over Matveiko by a hair for me, however - flip-flopped on this one. Matveiko drops only because of the Russian factor.
After these three, I think I have Say, Yegorov and Ciona in the next tier clumped together.

That still has decent value at this point in the rankings. An offensively limited, but otherwise solid defenseman with size will still have a fairly long NHL career. The rest of the guys on the list have major question marks of even making it to the NHL.

I think a solid bottom pairing defencemen is fantastic value at this point in the rankings - 20th would be decent value most years. I don't disagree with how you view him - I share your optimism about him. We just differ in that I feel that there are other prospects who rank higher on my personal voting methodology (ceiling x floor x likelihood). I think there are some additional promising prospects who rank hire for me than Hurtig does at this point, even though I like Hurtig. It speaks more to the quality and depth of this pool of prospects more than anything. Everyone at this point has holes in their game, Hurtig included, and it just depends on how we view them individually. I like Hurtig, but I like a few others a bit more, that's all.
