Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2025 - Round 30 Run Off
Welcome to the annual Calgarypuck Prospect Poll!
As per usual ...
1. Rank the prospects as you like. Upside, chances, or trade value
2. I will try and do one a day which should get us to mid to late August
3. Graduates and/or runoffs will be determined in each case
4. Please don't complain that the polls are going to deep. We go until all the prospects are ranked, so don't vote if you don't want to.

I have no idea who these players are, but holding a runoff for Flames 30th best prospect is outstanding

I have hitched my wagon to future first liner Yan Matveiko!

Ciona despite having a lower ceiling brings intangables to the team that cannot be understated. There are 4th liners/bot 6 forwards and then there are Energy guys that provide an identity to the team.
I think Ciona is likely to be the next Lomberg, not the next Adam Ruzicka

Didn't have either of these guys next, but so be it.
Ciona because I have no idea if Matveiko will ever come over to NA, or develop into a legit prospect. He's a mystery box to me.

Matveiko has a very intriguing skill set. Seems like he's just got a legit potential as a top 6 forward. Long shot however too exciting to overlook.
Ciona seems like a future Wranglers captain and great character guy. I see his trajectory more like Clark Bishops. Will get a cup of coffee at some point but will be a bubble guy.

Lucas Ciona all day. Every Wranglers game I went to last year he was noticeable, not in a flashy way, but in a hard working one. It's kind of crazy people are voting for a 7th round overaged MHLer rather than the guy already playing in the AHL.

We are in round 30. At this point I think it's had to strongly object to how anyone is voting. We are largely voting with very little knowledge.

Matveiko is a swing for the fences type pick. Potential ceiling could be higher.

To that point it is impossible to have bad takes when choosing the 30th best prospect in the system.
Also if you don't choose <prospect I like> you're a gibbering idiot who doesn't know how to use their brain so I can really see nothing sides.

The don’t have a lot of players like Ciona in the system. He’s similar to Pospisil.

Fair. Matveiko is more of an unknown than Ciona at this point, so you could make the case he has a higher potential 'upside'.

I love Ciona, and he really impressed last camp with noticeable increase in speed. He has tonnes of intangibles, tough, physical, smart.. but I think he tops out as a 4th liner. Real glue-guy though that helps the team even more off the ice than on it, and I think he has a reasonable chance at a career in the NHL.
I just have to give it to Matveiko. Much more upside it seems with him, though I feel I am still throwing a bit of a dart at this kid while being blindfolded. This upcoming season should provide us with much more insight into this kid, but it does seem he has the size, skating and skill to at least become a middle-six presence, with perhaps more to give.

That was my thought. I don't know either player at all, but Ciona's AHL production suggests he's unlikely to become much. On the other hand we've seen several prospects ranked down here actually play NHL games.
But Matveiko at least seems to have some intriguing potential upside, and was one of the two prospects the Flames' scouting team were passionate enough about that Conroy went and got another pick.
Those are my very half-ass reasons for voting for him.
That and he has a cooler name.

My tinfoil hat theory is that voters deliberately attempt to get these runoff votes as close as possible. They always seem to end very close together.

I have voted Ciona for a number of rounds straight and this guy seems to me like an excellent 4th liner, just need to see him in the big show to be sure. You just never know how they properly project in the NHL without seeing them play in the NHL.

Ciona's weakness was always skating. It will need to be at least NHL average.

Skating is the thing that can make 4th liners effective at the NHL level. A 4th liner chasing the game is a liability.
