I wonder if Blaster can fill us in, but why are they re-signing a guy that is likely going to have injury problems the rest of his career? He's only played more than 50 games twice in his career of 8 seasons. He's already 29 and aging about as well as warm milk.
My guess is he's out of the league within 3 years. He just can't stay healthy.

Because if his injury problems are behind him he is a Vezina calibre goalie. That's the logic. That's the lottery ticket they're buying
The expectation is he won't play more than 40 games in the regular season ever again. That's why they paid Lankinen as well. It's going to be a pure platoon. And when that doesn't work, Robidas island.

Does that suddenly put Arturs Silovs' availability in motion?

Yes. He has to clear waivers starting next season. He very likely doesn't make it to camp as a Canuck

Right, but then there's a helluva gamble that one of him, Lankinen, or Silovs will pass through waivers. I don't think any of them wouldn't get claimed by...oh I dunno...let's say the Oilers.
They have a 3-headed goalie problem and they're banking on the guy with serious injury problems returning to Vezina form (note, he did not look Vezina form at all last year even after recovering form injuries).
I mean, I'm happy that their management is making constantly questionable decisions, but I was wondering if I was missing something. Turns out I wasn't.

So agreed on term, but not money or structure?
I’m no agent, but does term not seem the easiest to agree on?

I think the Oilers fanbase quickly pivots to Silovs.
As might Philadelphia.

I would assume either one of SIlovs or Lankinen hits the market - Silovs probably? I guess there is still a possibility for Edmonton after all, unfortunately.

maybe makes sense for the Canucks to trade Lankinen? Could be a good return. There are some desperate teams

I don't understand this after locking Lankinen up to that contract. They have to be looking at moving him I guess.

I’m guessing they would have to overpay by a lot.
Cause that’s a sinking ship for sure.

Silovs will be the one to move.
I love an Arty Party and I think he has promise to be an NHL goalie but outside of May on wards he looks lost at times.
Despite his gaudy numbers in the AHL play-offs this year, he still had immense trouble tracking pucks that come from outside of the top of the circle. He had these issues despite the shots not just being at a slower velocity than they would at the NHL, but also the shot developing slower giving him more time to track the puck as it moves. When he has any sort of traffic in front of him on these shots, he's downright awful.
He is so good down low and in one-on-one situations but an inability to pick up shots coming from a distance is the type of flaw that will kill his career if he cannot sort it out. We saw it in the NHL when he played this year. He was actually a big part of why the Canucks did not make the play-offs, that's how bad he was despite only playing a quarter of the season.
Demko re-signing and Lankinen already being locked up leaves Arturs as the odd man out. It's the right call for right now. Silovs is not an NHL goalie yet.

This is not a bother to the oilers at all! Their number one target has been Carter Hart. He is will fit in with the club seamlessly.

I would have kept him and dumped Demko on the Oilers.
