Alex Pietrangelo announces it is unlikely he will play again
https://www.nhl.com/goldenknights/ne...ex-pietrangelo
Quote:
“The past few years have been very challenging on my physical well-being, and I am in a difficult position with my overall playing health,” said Pietrangelo. “After exploring options with doctors as well as my family, it’s been advised to remove the intensity of hockey to see if my body can improve so that I can return to a normal quality of life. This decision has been difficult to come to terms with after the last 17 years of competition and the camaraderie with my teammates and coaches. The likelihood is low that my body will recover to the standard required to play, but I know this is the right decision for me and my family.”
“Alex has our organization’s full support in prioritizing his long-term health and quality of life,” said McCrimmon. “Alex is dealing with hips that would require bilateral femur reconstruction, with no guarantee of success. Throughout the season, the steps that Alex needed to take to be able to play and practice began to grow and take a significant toll on his body. Our hope in February during the NHL’s break for the 4 Nations Face-Off was to give Alex treatment and rest to help provide relief, but instead, what we found were diminished positive results and a process that is no longer sustainable moving forward. Alex has given everything to the game and to the Golden Knights and has played through significant challenges in the pursuit of trying to win another Stanley Cup in Vegas. He is one of the most respected players in the league, not only for his elite talent but for his character, leadership, competitiveness, and professionalism. Today’s decision is a difficult one for both Alex and the Golden Knights, but it is being made for the right reasons – so that Alex can be the family man we all know him to be.”

I was gonna post something fairly cynical but thought better.
All the best to him and his family. Hopefully he heals well enough to enjoy retirement and beyond

They got 2.1m in cap space. Not quite enough to get Andersson at 50 percent retention.

Flames could eat that cap hit. For a big price.

They can go over the cap by 10%. Once they LTIR here they will be compliant to open the season.

Don’t bother trading them Andersson and go for the higher pick lol. Their defense is looking mighty thin

Is he having the surgery?
Is he retiring?
Is he taking the year off and will see what happens?

Good point, 2 years at $8.8M. Eat that - 25% and get 1st RD pick and prospects. I would do it.

The only trouble is that they're already 7% over the cap, so they have very limited room to add anyone before putting Pietrangelo on LTIR.
At the moment, they could go $9,550,000 over the cap. On opening day, with Pietrangelo on LTIR, they'll only be able to go over by his salary – $8,800,000. They really haven't got much money available to spend.

From what I saw they had 9.1M with Pietrangelo. They could spend another 9.5.
So they technically had 18.6 and spent 12 on Marner. Not sure much they spent on the scrubs for scrubs earlier.
They also got rid of Roy who made 3M I believe. They have enough to fill out the roster when LTIR kicks in.

For the poster's suggesting we take his contract how does that help Vegas. They just LTIR him and insurance is paying it so why would they pay to dump it?

Capwages puts them at $102.3 million with Pietrangelo and Marner on the roster and Roy off. They can only go as high as 105 in the off-season. They could add Andersson at 50% retention, but he would use up pretty much all their available space. (Puckpedia still doesn't have Marner on their roster, so I don't know what their number will turn out to be.)

The phrase "bilateral femur reconstruction" is a pretty terrifying one for an athlete. I don't blame him at all if he walks away.
Sometimes you get mad at teams for LTIRing guys to get some cap relief. I 100% do not believe that's what happened here. If he could play, he would, and the team would be happy to have him.
Pretty sad way to end a career, but father time comes for us all.
