love stories like this one. 27-year-old AHLer, gets claimed by the Canes after Kochetkov went down and absolutely runs with it, now gets rewarded with some insurance. 23-3-1 in his first 27 NHL games is insane.

Brandon Bussi signed a three-year, $5.7 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday. It has an average annual value of $1.9 million.

“A big thing is you look at the way our team is set up, and it’s an exciting time to be a Carolina Hurricanes fan because I think the players we have in our locker room, we have a great group and we have high goals," Bussi said. "So, in terms of the stability, we have an opportunity to do something here, and being able to lock this in, now I just get to focus on hockey and do what I can to help this team win. (That) was important to me.”

The 27-year-old undrafted goalie, who could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season, is 23-3-1 with a 2.16 goals-against average, .908 save percentage and two shutouts in 27 starts. He is tied for third in the NHL in wins and second in GAA (minimum 25 games).

Yeah, great gamble for the team and the player. If he ends up being a flash in the pan, it's a relatively short contract with a manageable cap hit. For the player, it's life changing money and a short enough deal that if he does manage keep it going, he can capitalize on his next deal.

Apparently the contract also came with a charitable contribution from the Hurricanes to the local autism society (Bussi's brother is autistic and his goalie mask is a tribute to him).
