Probably the end of the road for the draft pick San Jose used in the Kipper trade. Thought they'd keep him around for one more year to help them reach the cap floor but his game has fallen off a cliff in recent years. Was probably the best defensive defenseman in the game 10 years ago (like Slavin/Forsling is now)

Are they doing this as a favor for Vlasic so he can maybe have a shot at a job somewhere else?
Doesn't make sense otherwise as they have a buttload of cap space currently so it's not like they need the room.

Not 100% sure I get it either. The contract was front loaded and includes a $2 million signing bonus (which can't be bought out) on the last year. So instead of paying $5.5 million this year, they are paying him $3.167 this year and $1.167 next year.
I guess a slight money saving, but then they have to pay a guy league minimum to take his spot on the bottom pairing.

Strange move with 1 year left to only save 2.3M. Feels like opening a spot open for a younger guy more than getting rid of the contract.

He's done. After reading the Sharks reddit a bit the consensus is that he needs to be put out to pasture and that they need to rebuild their top 4 D.
The notes I took away are:
- Liljegren (RD) may work as a second pair RD but can't be the top guy
- Ferraro (LD) should probably be 3rd pair, not 1st, and they expect he will be traded away to make room
- Desharnais (RD) should be in the press box, not second pair
- Thrun (LD) and Thompson (RD) can work as 3rd pair guys
- Mukhamadullin (LD) looks good and can probably be a 2nd pair guy
- Dickinson is their #1LD of the future but needs to ease into the NHL
With that many LD options, Vlasic doesn't have a spot and arguably they need to move out another 3rd pair LD to try and make room for better players.

So what you're saying is, they're in desperate need of a top pair RS veteran defenseman to ease Dickinson into the lineup?

The sites all still include Couture against the cap but I thought he full on retired.

Yes. Although it sounds like they want to go add more than 1 top 4 D and move on from Ferraro and Thrun.
Their wishlisted for the start of next season looked like this:
<Top 4 LD vet> - <Ekblad/Andersson>
Muk (because none of them wanted to type out Mukhamadullin) - Liljegren
Dickinson - Thompson
X: Ferraro
And then basically have Dickinson climb up the depth chart and push the vet down the lineup.

They gotta spend some money. I could see them throwing too much at Gavrikov.

Fixed that for you.
The timing would have made sense 2 or 3 years ago, but not this year.
