Hahahahahaha.
Don’t.
I go up to see friends and family a few times a year. Nice enough place but yeah not at all a destination for vacation. There’s good lakes for fishing, a couple ok golf courses, but like I’d never go if it wasn’t for the people I’m going to see.

What about Yellowknife or Whitehorse?
For dinosaurs if you don't just want to do Drumheller, the Hell Creek formation in Montana/South Dakota is world class. You could do Bozeman (there's a museum there) and then drop down into Yellowstone.

Several years ago I spent a few days in Grande Prairie for work, in November. Brrrr.
The Tim Hortons vehicle lineup was all lifted trucks, one with a quad in the bed driven by a 40-something blonde.
That's all you need to know about Grande Prairie

Thanks for the advice. We may make a two-day trip with the grandson but will consider Drumheller with the family.

Slightly off topic but I once went to a Flames game with a friend and sitting directly behind us were three rig workers and some salesman (Mud? Parts? Supplies?) and the guy was clearly trying to schmooze these guys. Every time the beer vendor went by it was an order for 8 heroin beers. They peppered the F-word into every sentence. The second period focused mostly on their shock over how the cost of prostitutes in Grande Prairie was rising at a faster rate than other goods and services they consumed. I was really glad I brought my buddy instead of a client or one of my daughters. Anyway, they left about halfway through the third period because they wanted to hit the Casino and Cowboys (on the salesman’s dime) so I’m sure that turned into an expensive night. And that is the type of people you get when you go to GP.

Grande Prairie is definitely the world leader in JUD/capita (jacked up diesels) and they live and breathe the "Alberta rig pig" stereotype. Have been lots, would not recommend to anyone, at any time, for any reason.

The Currie museum is supposed to be quite good and I think they have some field stuff you can do, like you mentioned, but can’t imagine making the trip there just for that. However, south of there Grande Cache has some amazing scenery as well, Sulphur Gates is awesome and you can go rafting there. The town is not great though either, could then keep going south to Cadomin as well. I could see making a loop out of it for sure.
