Draft discussion
Branching this conversation out from the roll call for further discussion

I'm in 2 hockey drafts and 1 baseball draft and all 3 we have moved to what we call a "slow draft" The draft is completed over 3-5 days via a what's app draft thread rather than a live draft over a few hours. We could post on the 2025 draft thread on CP.
I'd like to propose that we switch to this format. I think we could make a schedule and complete over 4 days with 1 round needing to be completed each day. Not sure how we enforce people who take too long, but I would love to see the pace of the draft slowed up a bit to allow more trades. In all my leagues the activity spikes on draft day. This typically happens when a player a GM likes slips and there ends up being tons of picks for picks trades. Ripping through the draft doesn't allow for trade talks and once a player is drafted, most GMs hesitate to move a player they drafted and like.
Just a thought, but I think it would create more activity around the draft.

We could employ a time limit but people have jobs, kids, etc. That's really hard to enforce.
So what do we do if people take hours between picks?

Plus personally I live on a different continent so the time difference/internet issues makes the draft not that fun. I hate rushing to get a name in. Stressful as hell.

We could even start June 15 and have draft to be completed by NHL draft day.
We only have 4 rounds and 112 picks to be made.
I personally don't get the rush vs having the opportunity to make offers if guys I like are still on the board.
As long as nobody gains a competitive advantage by stalling, I see it as fair if completed by NHL draft day.
I also have been a commissioner of a league and doing it like this is easier to manage. People can go about their day and pick when they can and respond to offers before they pick. Even if one person takes 2 hours, as the Commish you wouldn't have to sit waiting for picks to come and just update as you have time.

A potential hybrid of the option could be Round 1 is done in one day, then Round 2, 3 and 4 are done in that 2hr time slot set up.
Not saying it's what we should do. But I have to say I don't mind the idea of having more time to potentially make a trade on draft day.
It's virtually impossible to make a trade on the fly in our draft.
The only caveat to all this is I am travelling June 5th to June 15th overseas and cannot draft during that time.
And it's my favorite part of the draft, so I'd be pretty choked if I couldn't partake.

Also, when are re-rates slated to come out?
If a change to this format were made, I'd think we want re-rates before we started.

Is the WhatsApp draft app a separate entity, or would I have to join WhatsApp to use it?
Alternatively, if we use the hybrid idea, we can just do it traditionally, with no clock on the first day.

Early June but we are reliant on the provider. So we aren't in control of the timeline. If he's late, he's late.

I say no more draft. Only random assignment of players.

Do it the NHL way; the Rangers can decide who they want to sign and everyone else can fight over the rest.

The current draft is my favourite part. In a time of our lives when disengagement and apathy has stolen our lives away, we need more things that require full commitment and focus. The live draft does that for us. That's all I got, lots of positives in making it a slow draft too.

I'm on board with making an ordinary Saturday morning time for Rounds 2 thru 4, but having a slow roll first round in the week prior.

I'd like a slower draft and agree it's getting harder and harder to dedicate an entire morning/day for this...even if a couple hours for 1 day really a weekend is impacted because of draft day when we could all be doing fun weekend activities. SLow draft you can be as dedicated as you want and research the next superstar orr check in whenever you get a chance to make a pick as opposed to sitting in front of a screen waiting.
Slow draft we can all go about our busniess and sprikle in a draft as opposed to planning a day/weekend around 2-3 hours.
Like the idea of a slow draft.
Will increase trades.
Will create more discussion.
Will cause tremendous pain making nerd GMs wait to see who the next guy selects...
Win Win Win

Thinking through this 1 step further, that means you'd go from 8àm to 8pm. 12 hrs. 720min. About 25min per pick.
Just so people have something to wrap their heads around.

Love the idea of a slower draft and agree that making trades on draft day using our current format has historically been really difficult.
This idea would surely increase trade activity which is always fun (and has been recently lacking, league wide)
My personal concern is that I work out of town quite often. Sometimes I'm unable to access a device/internet for a couple hours at a time. That said, most people here are on the ball and very quick so I think in the long run it would even itself out.
I'd love to try this new way though.

I love the draft as is.
I feel that if we were to introduce a slow play that we assign set pick times. For example 30 mins per pick. So the draft starts 10am, pick 3 would be 11am etc.
But the spur of the moment leads to chaos and players slipping etc. not sure we get that same excitement with the slow play.
The biggest bonus would be the potential for trades. But I’m not sure it would as there would need to be a lot of active GMs exploring the trade market to make the activity increase.

That’s tough for people who have jobs where they can’t check in through the day and/or are over seas

Help, save, whatever.

Is there a reason the draft can only be 12 hrs. Why can't it be over mulltiple days?

Unless there's a general consensus on changing it and what to change it to, then keeping the status quo makes sense. Obviously, will never be able to find a way that everyone is happy with, but at least with the current format, everyone knows the date and time, and if you can't attend, you can always make arrangements. Having it over several days just means people have to be pay even more attention to what's going on so as not to drag it all out.

IMO it rather needs to stay status quo or done over a couple days without time restrictions.
If anyone has draft picks they should be monitoring the site a couple times a day to know when their pick is coming up. Putting a time limit per pick is the worst idea imo.
Either bang it out over a couple hours or let it play out over a couple days.
