Isles Move Injury-Plagued Superstar
ISLANDERS GIVE A LITTLE FUTURE FOR TODAY
-- For Immediate Release --
January 10, 2006
Sources have confirmed that the New York Islanders have dealt away Tuomo Ruutu to the Detroit Red Wings.
Plagued with injuries which have kept the young superstar in the making on the sidelines, the New York Islanders decided on Tuesday that despite his talent, a strong push for the playoffs is more important, dealing away the forward to the Detroit Red Wings.
Moving with Ruutu to Detroit are defenceman Jordan Leopold, young forward Michel Ouellet, and a 2006 3rd round pick.
Leopold, who has been the leader on defence ever since being acquired from the Calgary Flames was a surprise to the media when it was announced he was one of the players on the move. Leopold has been the coach's favourite defenceman even when All-Star Sergei Gonchar was with the Islanders, and leaves New York leading the team with a +16 rating.
Headed to the Island is young forward Marek Svatos, along with defenceman Danny Markov.
In the end the Islanders have given up probably their most talented player in Tuomo Ruutu, but the young forward despite his all-world talent, can't do much when he's sitting in the pressbox rather than playing on the ice. Marek Svatos is no slouch by any means, and should be a solid contributor to the Islanders as they push for a spot in this year's post-season dance.
