Icon46 Adam Foote named as new head coach of Canucks

As per TSN.

https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/vancouver-can...oach-1.2305799

Canucks hire Adam Foote as their new head coach. Manny Malhotra was rumored to be the other finalist. Foote was an assistant coach with the Canucks since 2023. He was head coach of Kelowna in the WHL for 1.5 years with a losing record.

He's an unknown as an NHL head coach but a losing record coaching in the WHL doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Manny > Foote. This is good news.

It had seemed that Manny was going to be named the head coach.

I wonder if he gets named an associate or if they go with a more experienced name for that role.

I mean this alone is impressive; serving as an NHL assistant coach while still playing for the Avs and Blue Jackets for another 9 years. What a workhorse.

Makes no sense. He's still going to join the Devils when his contract is up. Why not hire the best coach in the meantime to at least get the most out of the team while you have Hughes?

You have a former player in the AHL doing amazing work with your farm team, who you have been told is going to get a job with another team much sooner than later... So you trot back the assistant of the coach who just left you after showing he had no answers for how to use this group?

The Hughes are like Pokemon. You've gotta catch them all.

Sounds oddly familiar to the Huska/Love situation the Flames were in a couple of years ago. Seems to have worked out for us (I guess debatable if you're on "team tank"), so maybe it works out for the Canucks?

Rutherford just cares about structure. This isn't different from Carolina or Pittsburgh, except that in Pittsburgh he had all-time legendary players to generate offence while everyone else played their structured, defensively sound, low-risk hockey. Go back and look at the comments he made after the first year he was there when Boudreau was still coach - essentially "we only win because we have a good goalie; we don't have any idea how to break the puck out of our end". Look at the trades since then - Bo Horvat parlayed into a future bottom 6 C in Raty plus a defenseman; JT Miller traded for a young defenseman in Mancini and then the pick flipped for another defenseman in Pettersson. The Canucks' entire near-term prospect pipeline is all defensemen - Mancini, Kudryavtsev, Wilander, Mynio... Lekkerimaki is the only offensive prospect they have as far as I can tell.

Canucks management wants to win games 2-1 in a shootout as much as possible. Foote is a good bet for that. As far as Malhotra goes, it'll be interesting to see if he joins the big club as assistant after the AHL playoffs - that would suggest he's on deck, but as you say, good chance he finds a better offer in the meantime.

Canucks regain a podium position in the worst owner Grand Prix.

According to Friedman, the Canucks signed Willander, too.

There is reportedly interest in Love from some of the teams out there looking for a head coach. It will be interesting to see how he does if he gets a shot as success seems to follow him around. Huska has shown to be a pretty good hire for the Flames so hard to complain about how things turned out.

It's like the Oilers hiring the Knob to try and keep McDavid there. It won't work.
