Icon60 Lightning re-sign Yanni Gourde (6 yrs, $2.33m AAV)

interesting deal for a 33-year-old. I guess this is what you can do in a state with no income tax ...

It's the Chris Tanev special - spread it out longer to lower the AAV.

It's interesting.

Gourde probably could have easily got like $4 x 3 - $12M total on the open market, but probably doesn't get much of a contract after that once he's 36.

So if he goes the traditional route it's:

$4
$4
$4
$1
$1
$1 (Maybe...probably out of the league by then TBH)

And he gets $14-$15M over 6 years that way.

Or he does it this way and gets $14M over 6 years still, but helps the team add other pieces, keeps the cap hit lower, and gets to stay where he clearly wants to be longer term.

What does that contract have to do with state income tax? It just looks like a way to soften cap hit.

Great AAV but takes him to almost 40. Overall I'd say it's worth it

Can we interest them in a slightly used (but still awesome) Coleman??

Retain on Coleman for a signed Issac Howard.

I'm very confused about the no state income tax part of your post. How does that factor into an older role player re-signing with his team?

In a state with no income tax, you can sign players to contracts, just like in a state with income tax.

This contract ends long after Gourde turns into a pumpkin

I do think the lower tax jurisdiction has some advantages. But this is more of a contract with 3 more years added on to get the AAV down. If anything it's the savings on the AAV of Geuntzel, Hedman, Point, and Kucherov adding up to allow them to add Gourde at this number.
