Dailyfaceoff: Flames might go big game hunting this summer
https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/ca...st-connor-zary
Quote:
Speaking with a source close to the situation in Calgary, the Flames are going to explore ways to bolster their lineup this summer. But the plan is not to acquire just any name; if the Flames are to make an outside addition, it will be a top UFA or trade target. Based on conversations I’ve had with those inside the organization, the Flames plan to go “big game hunting” in Free Agency; if Calgary cannot land one of the bigger-name free agents, they will explore the trade market or carry their cap space into next season and go from there.
|
Quote:
Speaking with a source, the Flames’ main objective is to bring in an impact scorer. But, as mentioned above, the Flames are not going to go after just anyone – they want to go big game hunting. In years past, the Flames were on the hunt to add to their center ice position, but after the acquisition of Frost last season that need isn’t as pressing. The Flames want to add a forward of any position that can help the team’s offensive production at even strength and on the power play.
|
Speculates they will go after Marner.
Also on Zary, Bahl, and Frost contract negoitations:
Quote:
Last week, I reported that the Flames were planning to explore a bridge contract with Zary in the neighborhood of three years at around $3 million. In the case of Bahl and Frost, both situations appear to be unique, according to sources. The plan for Bahl is a longer-term contract if the Flames are to have their ideal scenario unfold. Bahl, who will turn 25 next month, registered 17 assists and 20 points in 73 games this season.
As for Frost, the 26-year-old registered just three goals and 12 points in 32 games for the Flames after coming over from the Philadelphia Flyers mid-season. Speaking with a source, there is a belief that the Frost camp could look for a one-year contract, which would give the player a chance to bet on himself after a mediocre campaign in 2024-25. It would also walk Frost to UFA status in July of 2026; if it goes to arbitration, the Flames would try to get a two-year contract awarded.

Well, I don't know why I came here tonight
I've got the feeling that something ain't right
I'm so scared in case I fall off my chair
And I'm wondering how I'll get down the stairs…

One thing the writer has wrong is the Flames can't ask for a 2 year award in arbitration.
If the player is 1 year away from UFA, the arbitration award is automatically 1 year.

I'm okay with going after big game UFAs that are in the 26-28 year old range, Marner included. 7 year deals for higher level players that end in at 35 years old as worst case is more than manageable with the cap jumps expected in the next few years. Would be disappointed if they were looking at players older than that range though.

I believe in the Jays.

If they Flames look at Morgan Frost and think "whelp we've got the C position well in hand" then that's... not great.

They were ready to offer Rantanen all he got and more from Dallas had he made it to free agency (from what I heard/read) do they'll so what the Flames do best. Offer enormous money to someone who will turn it down to go elsewhere.
Just hope that means they don't do the the 2nd best thing they are good at. Offer long term deals and big money to a consolation prize.

I have said it before that I have it on good authority that Flames will be offering Marner a very heavy contract. Perhaps even close to maximum.
But they won't make mistakes of years past- spend that cap space on others if Plan A fails. The organization is focused on acquiring top players.

One or two 30 goal scorers changes this team big time.
Questions remaining. What do you do with Sharangovich and if you dump Anderson what are you replacing him with.

What is a 30g scorer, though?
Someone that can score and generate their own 30 goals? Sure...
Someone who has previously scored 30 goals? I don't think that makes any difference to the roster tbh. Sharangovich is a great example of that. He is capable of scoring 30 goals.
Huberdeau is another example. A player that is capable of potting 100 points. Doesnt mean they will do it on this flames roster.

Yep, more offense (likely) and hard to be worse defensively.

If true, this is good news in my books. I incorrectly predicted prior to this last season that the Flames would finish in the bottom 5, but it became evident that with Wolf in the fold, that's not going to happen. Things can change with Wolf and goalies are voodoo, but if I were forced to bet on it, I'm betting Wolf remains one of the league's top goalies for a good while, which means finishing low enough to get a shot at a top 5 pick is highly, highly unlikely. So, let's go for it and make smart adds to address areas the team needs help in. Scoring help is the most urgent.

Marner can create chances from Nothing. Would be more than happy to add him. Coleman, Sharangovich and Farabee can all be moved out in coming years quite easily if we ever need some cap space, that's a hair under 15m for 3 3rd liners.

'not as pressing' is very different than 'well in hand'
why use quotes and then completely change what was said?

This also kind of reiterates what I felt was obvious, they'll be looking to add plenty of C depth at the draft.

I'm fine with a 1 year deal for Frost. He needs to show a lot more.
