News Roundup

How Dustin Wolf saved the Calgary Flames' season

Dustin Wolf's hometown stinks and he knows it.

The Calgary Flames goaltender is a native of Gilroy, California, which proudly bills itself as the "Garlic Capital of the World." Drive through its farmland, open the windows and the pungent odor of the garlic harvest envelops your olfactory system like malodorous blanket.

"That's the smell of home," Wolf told ESPN.

Want to understand the Flames? Watch their win over New Jersey

The Calgary Flames are not a perfect hockey team.
They don’t score a lot of goals. They low on what’s termed “elite” offensive skill. Their blueline group features two experienced, reliable veterans, leading a group that’s otherwise full of interesting projects. Their primary netminder is a fresh-faced rookie from California who’s considered small for the position.

Examining the Flames’ middle six forwards and the playoff push

With 15 games remaining, the Calgary Flames still find themselves very much wrapped up in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race. After a huge 2-1 win over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, the Flames find themselves two points back and nipping at the heels of the Canucks and Blues for the final Western Conference wild card spot.

Checking in on the Calgary Flames’ playoff odds this week

Welcome back to our weekly playoff odds check-in. This week’s playoff race in the West remains tight, and the Calgary Flames are right in the thick of it. Last week, the Flames occupied the second wildcard spot but now find themselves barely outside the playoff line.

The quietly dominant skill Kevin Bahl brings to the Flames

The stat sounds made up, like something an agent would come up with to bolster his client’s stock.

Stick checks.

And while it’s not the sort of category poolsters will start incorporating into their fantasy leagues, it says plenty about a player’s reach, timing and ability to read plays.

3 Flames players will lose their waiver exemption after this season

As the 2024-25 regular season winds down, we’ll start turning our attentions to the future.
Quietly, one of the most important parts of the National Hockey League’s roster building tools is the waiver wire: the Calgary Flames currently feature a pair of blueliners (Joel Hanley and Brayden Pachal) that they acquired for the waiver fee.
But waiver statuses often change between seasons – especially for younger players. The Flames organization currently features nine players, three NHLers and three minor-leaguers, that will lose their waiver exemptions when the 2024-25 season concludes.

Thank you for all the work you put into these! It's the most comprehensive game day summary I've ever seen in 50 years of watching hockey.

You help everyone get their helmets on!

Not much chance we get a call from the refs tonight on Wideman’s birthday.

Bad news New York...a huge firestorm is sweeping the East Coast...because the Flames are in town!

Now be good little bitches like New Jersey and roll over.

Thanking your posts is not enough, Cheese. I really love these GDTs, especially on the weekends when I can read through all the articles with my Bailey’s & Coffee!

I especially love the call-outs to Flames Alumni!

Say what you will about Dennis Wideman, but he had a couple amazing seasons and...he smoked a Ref...no hockey fan will ever convince me that they've never dreamed about just cranking the hell out of a Ref.

Dennis Wideman lived that dream! He lived it for all of us!

Sure....that came with some problems of it's own, but destroying a Ref isn't something that happens often anymore...

Oh man, that's a good question! My favorite cheese? Well, it's gotta be the one who's always on the power play, never gets penalized for being too sharp, and always scores big with their Gouda sense of humor! But if I had to pick a real cheese, I'd say it's a face-off between cheddar and mozzarella – who needs a puck when you can have a wheel of cheese on the ice? Just imagine the goalie trying to block a slapshot of melted mozzarella!

Maybe it's just me, but I feel they've been getting better at these daytime games lately.

Tough match up though, Isles certainly have motivation, not in tank mode

Hunt gets 3rd line duty. It really feels like 2 x 2nd lines and 2 x 4th lines. Miromanov remains in the lineup ahead of Pachal.

Go Flames!

With such a tight race for the final wild card spot there is so much pressure to win every game. Anytime the Flames can beat Roy I secretly hope to see an unhinged spazz out for the extra satisfaction it comes with. As far as this game goes, another low event one goal game going into the 3rd probably gives them their best chance to win and continue to craft a successful playoff series style of strategy. I’m comfortable with whichever goalie gets the nod and whichever defense pairing combinations the coaches choose. Go Flames!
