Default Vladar Discussion

Is it time to consider bringing this guy back with Cooleys play dropping off a bit?

Because recent goaltending play always portends future goaltending play?

I think if this team had run support, and a pretty good 65 game starter, that he is a very serviceable career backup.

We seem to have one of the two, and I don't think we expect to compete beyond 6-8th in the conference without the other.

So would the Flames take him on a year to year backup contract? Probably yet.

I think the real question is, is he ready to settle for a career backup roll, and the his 2x$2M contract was probably the peak of his career? Maybe not, I think he probably signs with a team that promises a chance at 25+ games, and may or may not follow through.

He is good in my opinion

You can’t deny that he has sheltered Wolf, taking the second of back to backs all but once (when instead he drew first overall Washington and then defending Cup champs Florida)

Consider the opponents - Vegas twice - both Vladar. Chicago three times - all Wolf.

They have recently given Wolf more good opponents. He has, I’d say not coincidentally, looked more human

I look at the games that were really bad and the Toronto loss for Wolf, the team was horrible, just like the 8-3 Tampa loss. I don’t fault either guy there. Those games, the team was unacceptable

Wolf gets the muffin games to pad his stats, Vladar gets a much higher proportion of starts against tougher opponents or second of back to backs. I think a look at those numbers would illuminate the situation.

They reportedly get along really well

Sigalet said he sees him as a number one. Maybe not elite but he has that potential

Obviously Wolf has that potential and is early in his career. But his numbers are in part thanks to the sheltering Vladar has given him

I'm pretty sure Oettinger re-signed for 8 x $8.25M.

Lehnar, and Petersen are done in the NHL.

Those are slim pickings. Jake Allen and Fredrik Anderssen are the best of the bunch. I don't know what Stauber is, but he's the most intriguing goalie.

I would probably try to sign Lyon, Foresberg, and Samsonov in that order ahead of Vladar.

I say bring him back at the right price.

I also worry he may want to test the market to see of he can get a job as #1 with another team.

If I am Vladar, I would probably want to explore a different situation. He knows Wolf is the #1 guy here now. Otherwise, I would definitely love to have him back.

I really like Vladar. I still think he ends up being a solid starter somewhere.

I’d sign him if he wants to stay. Seems like a great teammate

I doubt he's a candidate to be anyone's #1.

He's been barely a reasonable backup.

Wolf is 15th in goals saved above expected with a +14.3. Vladar is 63rd in goals saved above expected with a minus 1.8. (These are all situations numbers from Money Puck.) So, normalizing for the difficulty these two goalies have faced, Vladar has been a very low end NHL backup this season. I think you also have to consider the career save percentage of 89.4%. I’m hoping the Flames find a better backup goalie.

Yet, Flames Goalie Coach Sigalet sees him as a starter in the NHL.

You say..barely a reasonable backup.

Who do we believe?

Do you really think that Vladar is a starter in the NHL?

This is the best point of the thread. Vladar's numbers aren't great, but he often gets the tougher match ups/games. Wolf is the #1, but until he can show he can beat elite teams on a consistent basis and play back-to-back and 3 in 4 when needed. I see Vladar getting 25 to 30 starts and Wolf getting in the 52 to 57 range. Flames have cap space so it comes down to Cooley, I'm ok to roll with him and Wolf, but it could be bad for Wolf's development if Wolf struggles next year and Cooley is a bust.

Flames have cap, maybe offer him 1 year at $2.5 mil. Doubt he gets more, and he has a shot at 25-30 games with the Flames if he plays well, he could earn a better contract with us or different team.

More likely than …”. he is barely a backup?”

He has gotten a lot more of the difficult starts…than Wolf.

What do you think Sigalet is going to say? “He’s barely a backup”?

We can call them as we see them on here.

The fact of the matter is….

Wolf has been extremely sheltered…

Vladar has not! Don’t believe me, look at their starts.

I don't see any scenario where Vladar is a Flame next season. He's going to want more money as a UFA and a better chance at starting which doesn't fit with the Flames who have Cooley already locked up on a one way contract and don't need to overspend on a backup goaltender that has a substandard career SV% of .893. Vladar seems like a good dude but he really isn't very good and the Flames should have no issues replacing him.
