What an odd move for the Devils.

I get they don't have a 1st, and want to make the playoffs, but they are not a threat at all without Hughes in the lineup.

Waste of assets to try and limp into a playoff spot.

I could be wrong but Hughes gets injured a lot and I don’t remember them sinking when he does. They have a lot of talent up front. Not saying they will win Stanley but also might not be first round fodder.

When your second line is Palat - Mercer - Tatar, I don't think you have much of a hope of seriously competing.

Additionally - is Dumoulin really needed when guys like Nemec and Casey can, and should be playing regularly?

They have 3 2nd's and need to replace Hamilton in some way. Also, wouldn't be surprised if this is a long term play where he signs in New Jersey this summer. Dumoulin is a good player.

I am starting to feel optimistic about their pick. I know its top ten protected this year but I could see them missing the playoffs without Hamilton and Hughes and with Markstrom banged up. And I don't really see Dumoulin moving the needle in a big way. Would be amazing if the flames pick going to the Habs is 20th and we got 12 or 13 from the Devs.

Could be looking to move Nemec or Casey in a trade for a high end forward like Rantanen.

Fitzgerald could be feeling the pressure to go all in with the move for Markstrom.

This makes sense if there are more moves coming. Potentially moving out Nemec/Casey for a top 6 forward.
