Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad has been suspended for 20 games, without pay, for violating the terms of the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the suspension is accompanied by mandatory referral to the NHL/NHLPA Program for Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health for evaluation and possible treatment.
The National Hockey League will have no further comment on this matter.

Pretty sad. Maybe he didn't spend enough time getting clean. After seeing his statement, probably shouldn't just assume a pain killer is.OK.
His wife is a physican. No excuse.

I was hoping for my assistant mixed up my vitamins and I unknowingly took something that I shouldn't have.

Makes the Jones trade/return make a little more sense.
Have to think they had an idea this was coming.

How would they have caught it? Do they do random testing for whatever? I have no idea.

Yes, Ekblad's statement says he failed a random drug test.
Not sure if it's changed but this article from 2018 says:
Quote:
"A maximum of 60 players are tested in the offseason, and they are selected randomly.Every team is subject to teamwide, no-notice testing once during training camp and once during the regular season.
Individual players can be selected for random testing during the regular season and playoffs. Any time the testing takes place, it must be done "at work on the day of a scheduled practice or meeting." Testing does not occur on game days."

I get the cynicism, but I didn't expect the league to have the balls to suspend a star player for 20 games over this.

I knew a guy who was 6 foot at 11 years old.
Some people are genetic freaks.
The fishy-ness has nothing to with that though. Probably ky more to do with the privileged man in Florida aspect.

Maybe he can get a sponsorship deal with Tropicana.
"From now on, the only juicin' I'll be doing is with Tropicana's Pure Premium fresh-squeezed Florida orange juice."

There is no grey area though, this is the puck over glass of suspensions.
