apparently my wife knew about this one, but wasn't going to tell me
oh well. the important thing appears to be you can still drive at your favorite speed in the left lane, but if you are in the right/shoulder lane slow down or its going to hurt

Same deal down here...and they are realy cracking down on it.
The law was passed as a result of 3 troopers getting clipped and killed in the last couple years after routine traffic stops on the Interstates/highways.

the law makes sense, but I have to admit I hadn't heard of it at all.
The province launched an education campaign prior to the regulations coming into effect.
I never saw it.

I must say the the first I heard of it was when a buddy and I were driving down Deerfoot, and I wondered aloud (read: was yelling at other drivers) as to why eveybody was suddenly slowing down.
I still haven't heard anything in the media about this until now. And every morning I watch either Global or CityTV news as I get ready.

Sounds like another CASH COW. Mooooooooooooooooo, err oink!
Damn greedy pigs.
$632.00??? What a scam, it should of been a warning or maybe at most a 50 dollar ticket. I would of wound up in jail if it was me who was pulled over for that.

The problem I have is this: I just renewed my registration for my car. There was no info in the mail out, nor at the registry about this new law.
It's not like new driving laws are being created often. Are we expected to phone every month to somewhere to ask them if the laws have changed?
Bring the law in, and then once a year has gone by and everybody has received the info in their registry renewal, then start enforcing it. But throw us a fricken bone here.

The key in the whole article was that she didn't slow down nor based on what the ticket is about did she move over.
Perhaps it's just me but I always slow down when passing emergency vehicles or cars in the shoulder and make sure I do it by moving as far over as I possibly and safely can.
Had this driver shown the least bit of sense and concern for peoples safety she would have atleast slowed down to say 80 or whatever to show she was atleast paying attention. Had she done that no ticket. Instead it was blatant disregard for peoples safety.

my wife (who as I mentioned above didn't see fit to fill me in) said she was told (by a tow truck driver) that there is one radio station in Calgary that is playing adds about this
umm. that's helpful
I certainly agree its a noble attempt to save lives. I sincerely hope they don't just start planting police cars on the side of their road on the other side of the hill with their sirens on in an attempt to catch people into getting tickets

You guys gotta step away from CP once in awhile for news you know, Cowperson can't be expected to post every single news item everyday in OT The campaign lasted over a month and they played radio and TV ads constantly, a big colour ad was in the paper everyday!
Anyhoo I slow down when I see flashing lights anyways even before the law just out of reflex associated with the red & blue lights...and the law has the idea right, although kinda a cash cow, they should be increasing the demerits instead of the fine. It's kinda harsh but that woman deserved it, if she doesn't believe so she can watch these videos, in both cases the cop in question is lucky to walk away without a scratch but I sure as hell don't wanna be these guys:

This was all over the news when it came out. I remember hearing about it on the morning news reports and seeing ads in the Herald.
Although to be honest, I had forgotten about it so I would have been tagged.

To everybody who saw it, good for you. But that still doesn't explain why the gov't didn't place the information in the one spot where we all have to look as drivers; and that is our registration. Inserting a flyer is cheap; and not nearly as random as a radio TV or newspaper ad.

If this is an attempt to save lives, then I am all for it...but really, the government is doing a horrible job at alerting us about such a law coming into effect. I haven't heard anything about it. Pretty bad job if half the posters posting in this thread doesn't even know this law exists.

You don't renew your drivers license every year, just your plates and the driver gets a ticket. Even then, you can register 2 years at a time. And this new law was only passed in the spring 2005 session - not even a year ago.
I think media ads can easily be overlooked, but I can't think of any way of notification that would be perfect, not fliers in the registrations, nor in the mail.
How far does the gov't need to go for due diligence in letting the public know about changes?

Nice.... im sure any cop would oblige and throw u in jail.
Why dont you go tell their respective wives or husbands after you kill one at the side of the road, that slowing down is a 'cash cow'.
Wow... just wow..... so ignorant.

Saskatchewan has had the same law for awhile now. I found out the hard way travelling through a few years ago. Police pulled over on the shoulder facing east. Me driving west, and just being polite pulled over as far left as I could and slowed down to 100. Unfortunately that was 40 over and cost me a couple of hundred. I tried to claim Albertan ignorance, but I have a feeling that only added fuel to the fire.

It's all the damn rubber necks that cause more accidents at the original accident scenes, now we legally have to slow down and EVERYONE who does will be looking intently at what's going on, then boom they rear end someone else who is driving too slow and rubber necking at the same time.
And yes it is a cashcow, $632.00 that's way to much. Try 50 bucks.
Oh wait we are a rich Province and the greedy cops just want more $$$.
