Default New Calgary Police car?

I was driving on 11 St SE going south through Inglewood yesterday, and when I was getting close to the police station on 26 Ave (close to the traffic circle going up to Blackfoot), I saw a new white police car idle on a vacant lot.

It is not the old style whiteCalgary police car with the blue and red signage, but a new white car with the present gold lettering and enblem, basically the same police cars we see today but in all white. Since I was driving I couldn't take my phone out to grab a photo.

Anyone know if the Calgary police is getting another set of coloring scheme for their fleet?

Ghost decaling and making police harder to spot... really trying to win the hearts and minds of the public, huh.

1. Visibility itself *is* a crime deterrent.
2. Maybe trying to make yourself the invisible watcher isn't the best idea for law enforcement which -- as an institution -- has pretty negative public relations.

First it was the intimidation play with the American-style colour scheme, now this.

I'm glad they are doing it. The idiot UCP bright neon sign was one of the stupidest ideas ever. Drivers have been way worse since photo radar became non existent.

Was one of the smartest ideas ever.

Driver's slow down which is what is the entire point. Magic fairy tickets in the mail 2 weeks later aren't really deterrents- they're a cash grab.

You're talking about two different things.

1. Increasing visibility requirements of photo radar which is an active, visible deterrent from speeding. This is a good thing, especially in school zones, playground zones, and construction sites where we want people to go slower.

2. Dramatic scaling back of the automated camera enforcement program to only school zones, playground zones, and construction sites (plus 'special case zones' that municipalities must make a good argument for). Also a good thing because it's pretty clear -- especially in places like Edmonton -- that its use became excessive and predatory, serving the government purse through revenue generation as a primary function and not safety which is what it was supposed to be used for.

I'm curious to see the actual reduction in revenue caused by the bright neon signs on the vehicles, because the one always parked westbound Airport Trail before Deerfoot is still lighting people up like a Christmas tree.

That's prob the only one that makes money since it's catching all those rental cars. lol You don't even see one on the bridge at Crowchild anymore. Or Glenmore right before you hit Elbow Dr.

Didn't CPS say they were down like $20mil from photoradar?

Yeah, it's likely ensnaring people visiting Calgary that are still getting their bearings as they approach the Deerfoot interchange. Great way to welcome people, "Welcome to Calgary, here's your photo radar ticket, you're one of us now".

Mercifully, that's one of the locations that would be abolished as of April 1, 2025.

That one is the ultimate cash grab. Big wide road with an oddly slow limit, many people coming from the airport that don’t know the city, and not a high risk accident location anywhere close by.

But man they can ticket people non stop, and they are there all the time.

That spot is a disgusting cash grab.

They got me in December dropping my wife off at the airport at 6 am. They parked away from the street lights with no lights on at all. I came up on this idiot doing 50 in the left lane for some reason, passed them and then saw the turned off tail lights too late.

Just stupid setup entirely. That road could be safely set at 80 KM

It is. The limit on Airport Trail is 80, westbound it drops to 60 for the diamond interchange... no jurisdiction in North America would keep Airport Trail at 80 through that interchange.

The speed drop is fine and logical, but setting up photo radar there is a cash grab due to the proximity of the airport and thus it will be abolished.

It would be less slimy if the limit lowered sooner, if anything.

Is it too abstract for people to connect the dots because they received the ticket two weeks later? Was that the only instance of your speeding or is it you got lax and your overall average speed has been creeping up over time? For me, it has always been the latter and I've adjusted.

Cash grab or the most cost-effective way of catching and fining offenders? Or both?

Are the fiscally conservative amongst us not in favour of this cost-saving approach? Wouldn't it be great if the cost of catching other offences could be similarly reduced?

It’s gross. If you are a “don’t do the crime if you can’t pay the fine” type you are a crappy human. Government shouldn’t be out there to gotcha.

It drops to 60 way too soon.

It's like, 600m before the lights. That's reasonable IMO.

Definitely a scumbag photo radar spot through, especially being downhill
