Flames Vlasic wants a Defensive Defenseman award.

Yeah, and a Gretzky Award for Most Assists should be there too. Absolutely bottles the mind these don't exist.

He's not wrong
Or, leave the Norris the Defensive d man award and name the new offensive d man award after Orr.

in all seriousness, I'd be all for it. There's a Selke Trophy for forwards, after all. Norris Trophy has felt like a pure "defenseman who can put up great offensive numbers" award for a long, long time ... might as well honour those who put their bodies on the line as well.

Offensive Defencemen Award
Defensive Defencemen Award
Beat Overall Defencemen Award - existing Norris trophy

Assist Leader

There definitely should be more awards. Then we can stop slamming guys like Karlsson for winning the Norris even though they are not the 'best defencemen'. Would be wild to see a defencemen win all 3 in one year - Makar is probably the only one with a shot at that.

It is weird that the NHL started a Rocket Richard trophy category but didn't start one for assists - Wayne Gretzky Award, or the Adam Oates, or something...

Karlosson won the Norris with 101 points and being a -26. The point total is impressive but as a defenceman your #1 job is to keep pucks outs, and get pucks up ice.

That's sounds like 2 jobs.

There definitely should be at least 2 awards for a position the compromises 2/5 skaters and players putting up 24+min a game.

This makes great sense, as the most valuable dman may not even be considered top 10 because he doesn't score enough points.

Do you remember when the Vezina trophy for best goalie was given to the goalie of the team which gave up the least amount of goals? That was changed so that there is now two trophies, one for giving up the least amount of goals, and the now Vezina for the league's best goalie.

They have an award for best defensive forward, why not one for best defensive dman.

Damned straight. The Norris has turned into a complete joke.

Fans have been asking for this for years.

And hell, to take the Devil's Advocate even one step further, there should be a third award for just straight-up Best Defenceman.

And it'd probably be called the 'Lidstrom Award.'

I’m not sure the overall defenceman award is needed. Keep Norris how it is and add the defensive one.

How did Mark Messier get an award named after him before Gretzky or Mario Lemieux?

Call it the Brad McCrimmon award

1222 games played, only 403 point, but ended his career + 448
