2026 Cavalry FC and CPL thread
2026 roster update is out so I guess it's time for a new thread. Not much of an update outside of Camargo having a contract option triggered for 2026 and Carducci leaving.
11 players signed for 2026, which are Kamdem, Klomp, Laing, Montgomery, Camargo, Henry, McGlinchey, Elva, Herdman, Ntignee and Wasrschewski
Club has until December 31 to exercise options on Field, Harms, Kobza, Baldisimo, Gutierrez, Myroniuk and Sellouf. Holliday, Aird, Shome, Wahling and Musse are out of contract and discussions are ongoing. Same with Gherisamencov.

Really a nothing update with all the options still outstanding
I assume they bring back: Field, Harms Kobza, one of Baldisimo or Gutierrez, Myroniuk, Holliday, Shome, and Musse. Aird?
Try and get Gherisamencov back on loan. Try and move Herdman out to free up cap space.
Potential for lots of new faces which is exciting as long as they recruit well
Wonder what Sam Adekugbe is going to be doing next summer... I honestly can't see him sticking with the Whitecaps after all his injuries and the development of Tate Johnson. Give him a call

Sam has a contract with the Whitecaps through next season. He was a big part of their strong early start until his freak injury with Canada in June. Tate Johnson was a nice surprise and deputized well but I think that is clearly still Sam's spot. His recovery is ahead of schedule and he expects to participate in preseason.
Maybe some day Sam will don a CPL jersey but I think we're a few years away from that. It would be an incredible coup for Cavalry, though.

I think that Shome is a lynch pin player on the Cavs. I really like the way he facilitates ball movement. I also love that he digs in and plays dirty when it is tight down the stretch.

Camargo, Klomp and Toby are the most important players IMO. But Shome is in that second tier and is very valuable to this team, I agree.

I like Camargo as a substitute, but if he starts he needs to be the first substitution.

Yeah the fact that he has a contract probably means this doesn't happen. I think from a Whitecaps perspective that a Laborda/Johnson combo is effective enough that freeing up Sam's salary against the cap would be appealing if they can spend that money elsewhere. And coming off a serious injury with his history his list of potential suitors might be limited. But maybe that all screams CF Montreal instead.
I'd make a call if I'm Cavalry. But in a league with even less of a salary cap it would be tough if he has options elsewhere. And for Sam and Canada's sake, I hope he sticks in MLS.

Adekugbe's salary in 2025 was greater then Cavalry's entire salary cap. Don't think he's going to take a 90%+ paycut to play in CPL for a many years, if ever.

Where does Piepgrass fit into this? Is he simply a free agent who only wants wants to play in Calgary? Could he be claimed/signed by another CPL team without compensation? Is he good enough to sign him long term? He did eat up a great deal of our u-21 minutes this past season.

I'm not sure what happens now that he's graduated. I know he would have left school if Cavalry offered him a full deal but went back to finish his degree when he started playing less after Gutierrez got healthy.
Personally I think they should let Baldisimo and Gutierrez go. Throw some good money at Shome, exercise Kobza's option and sign Piepgrass. Shome, Kobza, Piepgrass and McGlinchey as depth at CM is pretty good.

Ottawa's CONCACAF home game is being played in Hamilton. All their supporters are suddenly saying it's unreasonable to have to travel 500 kms now...

500 km to Hamilton is like 4000 km to Victoria. You have to take the attractiveness or repulsiveness of the destination into account.

Same, though probably an 80% chance it would be at McMahon now, since McMahon has proper turf and can operate in cold temps. Would have been even better if we got Ottawa's draw... home game at McMahon, away game in Nashville...
