The Bicycle thread

I have been thinking about getting a bike to go around some of the various paths that are near me as I have missed getting out into nature recently.

The problem I have is that I haven't owned a bike since I was about 15 and I don't really know what to look for in a bike at all. When I went shopping briefly online, my reaction was mostly, yes indeed that is a bike. I figure if I want to have something that actually fits what I'm looking for asking everyone for advise would be appreciated.

There is an active cycling discussion in the Off Topic forum where you will probably get a lot more eyeballs and generate some discussion and suggestions.
