In a vacuum, I don't hate that for McCabe, and it's actually fair and likely tilted a bit to the Leafs but when I look at the Leafs D group, their current top 4 are Reilly-OEL, Tanev-McCabe, who are all signed until the end of 2027-28. That's not a group that screams cup contention to me, so in terms of what the Leafs need to do, despite the deal in a vacuum is good, I'd say overall, it doesn't make sense for the Leafs considering what they need, which is a legit top guy, that will require money. This group of four eats up 20M.

Not only that, but Rielly turns 31 next year, Ekman-Larsson 34, McCabe 32 (just had a birthday), and Tanev will be 35 in December.

To me Benoit is a great stay at home dman. It’s a little outdated to have a general stay at home guy but in that role he’s fine. Leafs truly need a 1A dman to push everyone down in the depth chart but how many game changer dmen are in the game? I can think of maybe a handful literally. Not sure how they get that unless they deal Marner plus a high pick. Not sure who would even be available.
