Default DVD Burner Question

I just recently bought a new computer that comes with the Nero StartSmart software and I have some .avi video files I would like to burn onto the DVD-R's I have, the trouble is that I can't get it to work, does any body know how to burn these things?

So what happens exactly when you say you can't get it to work?

I know I stumbled with Nero for a while until I noticed there was a set of tabs in the upper right of StartSmart that separated CD and DVD functions. If you are past that, then I guess it depends on the type of DVD you want to make. If it is a run of the mill data DVD you should just be able to drag the files in and voila. However, creating a video dvd involves importing the files first, and converting them to the video dvd format. You can also create a custom menu for the DVD.

I'm assuming you will want to watch them on your dvd player.. in that case you will need to covert you .avi files into .vob files (unless you have a divx dvd player)

check out this link VCD HELP
its a pretty cool site and it has a bunch of guides and links to software that will help you convert files

I converted a couple movies using a free progam called AVI to DVD (pretty original huh) and it worked ok.. it as a pretty simple software to use and it took about 1.5 hours to convert a movie but the quality was decent, sound could be better.. no menus or chaptes though

Yes make sure you check whether the dropdown in the corner is DVD or not.

Then you should be able to just browse for your files, or you can drag and drop.

Then burn.

This will only burn a data disc, NOT a movie DVD you can play on an ordinary dvd player.

I have the final Nero 6 edition. It had some quick start tabs that you use to select what you want to do then it walked you through a wizard.

Most DVD burners burn multiple formats, are you sure yours does -R (probably does, just one more thing to check).

I'm fairly certain the problem was that they are in AVI format, I've been searching around to no avail to find a free program that will convert for me but haven't had any luck as the free to try ones wont allow you to burn uncopyrighted files....

So does anyone know of any freeware versions?

Anything? I've still been looking as I need to get one fired off before noon tommorow (the files are family video captures that out of town family want to take with them on DVD) and I've had no luck, if any of you know of a free program it would be GREATLY appreciated.

Looks like I'm going to have some ****ed off relatives, I cant get that program to work, yet again any last minute help would be greatly appreciated. I guess if worst comes to worst I could get it done sometime later and mail it out, but I dont think that would go over to well with them...

it's moreso an inept me using the program, I've done it the way that the trial tells you how but it's not following along like it should be.

I cant get it figured out, I guess I'll just purchase a program that does it instead of using those Freeware versions. I accidentaly spent the last couple of hours transferring that file into a mpeg which is useless, I had found one that did the job, the only problem being was that it had a small translucent picture in the middle of it, I might just purchase that software online. Thanks for the help anyways guys!

oops, I already canceled it as I thought I was wasting my time, I'm not sure. It had some sort of "Matrix" selection and in the trial it said to leave as is and when I checked later it just said mpeg. But like I said I've given up and if they dont like it well then too bad, my family doesnt beat around the bush (we're Irish) so I'm sure they'll understand but give me the grief anyways.
