Flames Instead of trading for right shot centres, here’s some 2025 draft ones

I hope the rumours about the Flames looking to add a right shot centre via trade during this season is just false.

There are potentially two right shot centre prospects to look forward to in this upcoming draft:

Roger Mcqueen:
Ranked #6 by CONSOLIDATED RANKING
Ranked #2 by ELITEPROSPECTS.COM
Ranked #6 by TSN/BOB McKENZIE
Ranked #5 by TSN/CRAIG BUTTON
Ranked #6 by FLOHOCKEY/CHRIS PETERS
Ranked #7 by FCHOCKEY
Ranked #9 by DAILY FACEOFF
Ranked #5 by DRAFT PROSPECTS HOCKEY

Jake O’Brien:
Ranked #15 by CONSOLIDATED RANKING
Ranked #21 by ELITEPROSPECTS.COM
Ranked #14 by TSN/BOB McKENZIE
Ranked #15 by TSN/CRAIG BUTTON
Ranked #18 by FCHOCKEY
Ranked #21 by DAILY FACEOFF
Ranked #36 by DRAFT PROSPECTS HOCKEY

Here’s a link to video about the two (ranked 5 and 15 according to NHL Draft Pros): https://youtu.be/LhzfsKTS_F8?si=uPsqOzmt4mifUxJu

Here’s also another additional link to video about Roger McQueen: https://youtu.be/1GacWSmI-is?si=pfkehVIVZmKFtw62

Really? A new thread to continue the same conversation?

How about acquiring good young players via every avenue available? Or to put it in a simple meme, why not both?

Good discussion by the crew in the game last night, highlighting that the Flames don't have a right shot C, and as a result, are hooped when they face key faceoffs on the right dot in the defensive zone.

Conroy is absolutely correct in targeting that as his most immediate need.

But if we get a center now they'll play their way out of drafting one at the draft!!

Obviously green text there

Whether they get one via trade or not , folks are going to have to accept that this team looks to be shaping into a team that will pick 11-16 than top ten.

Trust me, I want one of those top 5 centers too. Badly. Don't care about handedness. Flames need one of them. But I also will not expend energy to negativity if they finish mid pack like they want to.

I'm just not there yet.

The Flames are a hard working team that has some talent. Their goaltending has been pretty good to start the season.

But they've been outplayed in significant sections of all 5 games and have only surrendered one point.

Things are going to even out.

I agree on the top 5, wouldn't say 6-10 is out of the question.

How are the teams with all those top 5 generational players doing this year?

Edmonton 2nd last in division
Colorado 2nd last in division

Shouldn’t they be undefeated?

Colorado won the cup with theirs.

Edmonton is Edmonton. Not sure who you are talking about.

I’ll take a cup and starting 0-5.

It's such a crap shoot, though. The General Manager cannot manufacture a top-5 pick in the Draft, and has even less control over which top-5 picks are available when the team finds themselves in that position. Both Edmonton and Colorado were FORTUNATE to draft the two best available centres since Sydney Crosby. Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't.

Conroy said he wants an age appropriate center with upside. If he can get that player in a trade he should because they are the hardest asset to acquire. His pro scouting or letting his pro scouts actually do their job is paying off pretty well.

Which means we'll be drafting in the late 20s, because CGY's pick in range 11+ transfers to MTL. Which yeah, that's cruddy.

Too early to call it for sure, but it doesn't take a long period of play at a .900 level to exclude yourself from the top-10 spots in a draft. I expect in time we'll see the league 'up their game' after we get through this early season run and that'll make things tougher for the Flames. Once the opposition begins matching their compete level, the lack of skill we begin to become a bigger problem.

Colorado won a Stanley Cup.
Edmonton was in the Stanley Cup Finals last year.
Tampa won multiple Stanley Cups.
Florida won the Stanley Cup last year.

...not sure anyone really cares about standings in October.

Isn’t the whole point of drafting best player available is that you can use those players to trade for an area of need?

What kind of young centre does Coronato get you?

It is a crap shoot. But I am going to trust Craig and the scouts. When they are given the opportunity to draft and have picks they have shown they are one of the better drafting teams.

The idea that if you draft a top 5 draft pick C makes you a cup contender is laughable.

It isn't a guarantee but that is where vast majority of true #1 centers come from.
