Crash and Bang Winger
|
Plan B
With a few days between games the mind starts to wander ...
If the Flames keep killing it, this season will not result in a top 8 or so pick, and we are theoretically down a top line center (Misa, McQueen, Frondell ...). With that being the case, along with our captain probably retiring, along with having cap space, along with our having young talented wingers, along with a frustrated center from up North desiring a new location ...
I think you see where this is heading.
Does Conroy, should Conroy, make an offer to McDavid?
Please feel free to give me a lifetime ban Calgarypuck.

If Conroy had the opportunity to make an offer to McDavid, he one million percent should…
Is this a question?

Controversial opinion, McDavid's next contract with whomever will be so over priced that it hamstrings the signing team. I think the Oilers absolutely offer him 8x~$18+ depending on where the cap is, and for any other team it's going to take 7x$18+ to pull him away. For a 29 year old guy who has built the core of his game around foot speed, paying him that kind of money is bananas, but somebody will.

I don’t think I would. If you’re filling out your roster you could get 2 or 3 really good players for $18 million.
Per comments above. $18 million to one player starts to neuter the rest of the roster.

Yeah...why? A high-earning post-apex player on a non-playoff team for a long term?
Every part of that sounds like a bad idea.

No, thank you. I honestly can't stand the player one iota. He is selfish and lazy, as in no effort to deliver any form of defence. Don't get me started on his "personality".
I would have to find a new team to cheer for, I dislike him that much.

He's an extremely talented player. Many would argue the best ever (I wouldn't but the opinion exists) who has played with many other talented players in juniors and in the professional ranks.
But
He's won NOTHING
you have to ask why.

I'd offer McDavid a max contract for no reason other than to drive up the price for the Oilers. If the Flames offered him 7 x $18.55M (130M total), it would force the Oilers to offer him something like 8 x $17.0M (136M total).

This seasons still reminds me of the odd hot start we'd have in the dark years. I'm still expecting the wheels to fall off. That's fine, I'm enjoying the crap out of the wins in the meantime.
Let's not go and proverbially "extend Roman Turek" because we won a couple games.

Hell no...I'd rather have post-post-apex Sydney Crosby before that hosebag. By a country mile (or 2 kilometres)!

We can't rush this rebuild. We need a couple drafted superstars.

I can't imagine that if McDavid decided to leave Edmonton, that he would chose Calgary as his landing spot.
You'd have to think that the US would come a calling, perhaps in Chicago to play with Bedard. They have a cap space, the young and up and coming team and a desirable location.
Boston comes to mind as well.
Not certain how NYR fits him in.
But Calgary?

It’s McDavid, of course I’m giving him an offer. All 32 teams should. We could give a lot of money to him and trust Conroy to fill in the necessary holes. Those saying we shouldn’t clearly want us to continue to play without a franchise C.
I doubt he would sign here, but if he ever did it would be hilarious to have him completely annihilate his former team. He would always give us a chance at winning. The cap is continuing to rise, I don’t think it’s bad to offer a 17/18m deal. If we don’t someone else will. Like I said, I highly doubt he would sign here, but you have to AT LEAST put an offer on the table for him to think about if he becomes a UFA.

IMO you offer McDavid the contract for a few reasons:
1. he's obviously one of the best offensive producers in the league
2. It ####s with Edmonton really hard
3. No matter what you sign him to, he will be tradeable in some capacity.
There's basically no downside to signing him, especially since we will have the room.
