Atlanta is the only way Quebec gets a team.

Matthew Phillips may be an NHLer after all if they keep expanding

Calgary and Arizona (Utah) got their arenas. So the NHL can remove the relocation threats and get that sweet expansion cash

I hope this isn't true. There are already too many teams.

Definitely enough teams as is.

If they expand to 34 then they should also implement play-ins for wildcard spots. Keep things more interesting for fringe playoff teams since there are more who won't qualify.

They don't care about the quality of the product. It's all about the $$$$$

Look at how bad the NFL is getting and they haven't even expanded.

Atlanta is where new NHL teams grow up and move out.

From a selfish point of view, I don't like the idea of adding 2 more warm cities as options to players.

Aren't there any cities with crappy climates that we can add?

Seriously though, those cities are no brainers due to their market sizes. Atlanta is a tough one. It seems like there would still be a lot of risk, but it has a really high reward if they can make it work when you consider not just the size of the city, but the media market, and demographics.

I am a little surprised that they wouldn't wait until Phoenix is ready again though. Of course, with their local level politics, they may never get the arena they need.

NFL 32
MLB 30
NBA 30

NHL 32 -> 34?

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to add two more teams. But they should cap it at that. Right now the NHL isn’t any more watered down than the other big leagues.

Going to be interesting to see expansion draft rules. I presume the draft would happen for both teams at the same time. Wonder how that looks.

I think people are full of it if they think they can find the nuanced delta in quality between a 34 and 32 team league. Like oh really? Quality dropped? How much? How do you know? Generally, how specifically?

Furthermore even if you were to say well “quality” is lower and there’s more mistakes- that’s what makes games more exciting anyway IMO.

Less concentration of wealth in billionaires and more spreading of wealth to make more millionaires is a good thing IMO. Wouldn’t people want more NHL jobs available than less?

The only real downside is the odds of a team like Calgary winning a cup go down. That’s a bad thing, I guess.

They should go up to 40 teams, split the league, and introduce relegation.

Just for fun.

I used to be completely against this, until I watched welcome to Wrexham. Then I finally understood what the rest of the world has been saying

Not that I agree or disagree with expansion but 34 is an awkward number.
36 (6 divisions of 6), 40 (8 divisions of 5) is more balanced. This is just the beginning

I watched a video from their last season where two people went to Atlanta and walked around wearing their jerseys and asking people on the street questions about the team. It was funny the number of people who didn't even know who the Thrashers were or were just vaguely away that the were a local hockey team.

It kind of is though.

Basketball, Baseball and Football are 'mainstay sports' in America. The talent pool for those sports is absolutely enormous.

Whereas hockey is more 'niche' as, obviously, it is significantly more expensive to play.

Look no further than the Edmonton Oilers, they're paying a handful of top-end players and the rest of the roster is rounded out by a bunch of scrubs.

So...I think that the quality of the product being 'watered down' is actually rather accurate.
